Mahwah mayor, council endorse Christie

Mahwah’s mayor and council are throwing their support behind Governor Christie’s re-election bid.

Mayor Bill Laforet, an independent, and council members Lisa DiGiulio, Charles Jandris, Roy Larson, John Roth, Steven Sbarra and Harry Williams endorsed the Republican governor citing his willingness to work with members of the other party in a statement released by the campaign Tuesday. The township’s local government elections are non-partisan.

“His willingness to reach across the aisle to work with lawmakers and community leaders of both parties has returned common sense and results to government, re-energized our state’s economy and delivered landmark reforms that are working for our state and our families,” Laforet said in a statement released by Christie’s campaign.

Christie faces Democrat Barbara Buono, a Middlesex County state senator, in November. The governor received 4,602 votes in 2009, compared to Democrat Jon Corzine, who collected 2,942. There were 15,479 registered voters in Mahwah four years ago. The town has more than 25,000 residents. Continue reading

Construction union members pledge to help Christie win second term

Governor Christie called on more than 600 union members gathered in Newark to help him win re-election Monday night.

“I’m coming here tonight to ask you, will you work hard for me over the next 36 days,” Christie said inside the Laborers Local 472 Union Hall.

The crowd responded by breaking into chants of “four more years.”

Laborers International Union of North America’s New Jersey chapter, which represents about 20,000 construction workers, endorsed the Republican in December. On Monday, the governor went to the union hall to thank members for their support, but also to call on them to help get out the vote.

“We can’t take anything for granted,” Christie said. “We can’t take for granted that we’re going to win this thing in 36 days no matter how good the polls look right now, no matter how much New Jersey is better today than it was four years ago. You know the same way I know that the only way to get the job done is to work it hard.” Continue reading

Christie: Both parties at fault if government shuts down

The impending government shutdown is a failure of all of the leaders in Washington – Democrats and Republicans – Governor Christie said today.

“I think everybody’s handled it poorly,” he said about the disagreement between Democrats and Republicans that may force the federal government to close at midnight.

Speaking at a public discussion in Red Bank about hunger, Christie mostly talked about strategies for making sure poor people get the nutrition they need, such as free breakfasts and lunches for certain schoolchildren. But he also took questions from the moderator, Will Geist, a television news anchor, about the shutdown.

If Republicans who control the House, Democrats who control the Senate and President Obama don’t agree on a way to fund to the federal government by midnight tonight, the government will have to close.

“If I were down there, I’d say, ‘Listen, seven hours to go, everybody. Guess where you’re spending the next seven hours: Right here in the Roosevelt Room,’” Christie, a Republican, said when Geist asked what he would do if he were president.

The governor, who is widely seen as a contender in the 2016 presidential election, said that compromises he and Democrats in the state Legislature have reached could serve as a model for Washington politicians.

“If we can do it here, with the angry, nasty people we have in New Jersey,” he said, drawing laughter, “for God’s sake, you can do it anywhere.”

Governor Christie’s campaign stop in Orange with Mayor Dwayne Warren and Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo – two Democrats who have endorsed the Republican – draws protesters.

Governor Christie likened most American politicians to “Peanuts” characters that voters can’t understand, called the potential federal government shutdown “a failure” and talked about his weight and own political future on CBS “Sunday Morning.”

The Republican, who is seeking a second term, said he stands out among other politicians because he isn’t afraid to speak his mind, even if it means calling someone stupid or an idiot.

“I’ll tell you what I think most American politicians sound like and what, more importantly, what I think what citizens think,” he said. “Remember Charlie Brown’s teacher, ‘Wah, wah, wah, wah’? It all sounds the same and you can’t really understand what it is. Nobody says that about me. Nobody says that about me.”

The 10 minute interview features footage of the governor greeting people in Long Branch the week before Labor Day, walking past protesters at he campaigned in Orange last week, touring Sea Bright with Mayor Dina Long – one of the 48 Democrats who has endorsed him, visiting a drug treatment center in Paterson and walking through his mother’s old neighborhood in Newark, where he lived until age 5.

Christie’s Democratic opponent Barbara Buono, a Middlesex County state senator, has described the governor as a bully on the campaign trail for his tough talk. Christie lead Buono by more than 30 points and has a 66 percent approval rating in a recent poll. Continue reading

DiVincenzo defends support of Christie in Newark

A small plane carries a sign that reads “Real Democrats don’t support Christie” over Newark Thursday afternoon, where the Republican governor was attending a ribbon cutting.

In bright red letters against the cloudy sky, a small airplane carried a message over Newark Thursday afternoon, “Real Democrats don’t support Christie.”

The ad – reminiscent of those carried across the Jersey Shore all summer – was visible to everyone attending the Essex County Vocational Technical School’s ribbon cutting, including two guests of honor, Governor Christie and Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo, one of the 48 Democrats who have endorsed the Republican governor’s re-election bid.

The county executive made light of the sign during the ribbon cutting.

“You know there was something that was flying outside and that was meant for me: ‘Real Democrats don’t support Chris Christie,’” he said. “Smart Democrats support Chris Christie. I am a Democrat. I will always be a Democrat. But there’s a track record of what’s happened in the last four years in the county and there’s reason why, and I explained them, why I support him and this is one of them, but I could go into many, many other reasons.” Continue reading

Christie defends public appearance with Booker

Governor Christie defended his public appearance Wednesday with Newark Mayor Cory Booker, saying he’s not going to “play politics” just because it’s an election year and both men are running for office.

Christie is a Republican seeking a second term and Booker is a Democrat who is running for the late Frank Lautenberg’s U.S. Senate seat. The two officials, however, appeared together in Newark for a ribbon-cutting at a downtown mixed-use development that features housing, charter schools and retail space.

“The building was ready when it was ready,” Christie said during his monthly radio show later Wednesday. “I’m not going to play politics this year.”

Last fall, Christie faced criticism from members of his own party after he embraced President Obama and worked closely with him in the wake of superstorm Sandy just before the November presidential election. Christie was a supporter of GOP hopeful Mitt Romney at the time.

This year, Christie has endorsed Republican Steve Lonegan, the former mayor of Bogota, in the Oct. 16 special election to fill Lautenberg’s seat. Booker, meanwhile, is supporting Democrat Barbara Buono in the Nov. 5 gubernatorial contest.

Christie said Lonegan recognizes he’s just doing his job and questioned the suggestion that the right move would have been to delay an event for a building that was ready to open until after Nov. 5.

“That’s the kind of politics that makes people cynical,” he said.

Booker also defended the joint appearance — which Christie’s office later promoted in a YouTube video — when asked about it by reporters.

“There are policy reasons why I’m supporting Barbara Buono,” Booker said. “But I’m the mayor of the largest city in the state, he’s the governor. We have to work together across partisan aisles and one of the reasons I’m running for United States Senate is to try to bring that spirit to the United States Senate.”

Staff writer Melissa Hayes contributed to this report.

Buono compares Christie to Mitt Romney in economic critique

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Barbara Buono didn’t mince words on the campaign trail today, linking Governor Christie’s economic policies to those of failed GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

Christie, a Republican, offers only the same trickle-down economic policies that Romney tried to sell to voters during his unsuccessful bid for U.S. president last year, Buono said during a stop at Karnak Corporation, a roof-coating manufacturer in Clark.

“It’s the Romney economy in a fleece,” she told a group of Teamsters inside the facility.

“We know where that has left us,” she said. ”At the bottom of the barrel.”

Buono, a longtime state senator from Middlesex County, called for a redirection of tax incentives to small businesses instead of big corporations.

She also accused Christie of putting national presidential ambitions ahead of what’s best for New Jersey, citing his veto of a minimum wage hike and his lowering of a tax credit for low-wage workers.

“There’s only one person running for governor and she’s standing right here,” Buono said.

Sarah Jane Jelin, the president of Karnak, introduced Buono, who she once worked alongside when both were law clerks.

“I know as a businessperson, we need a vibrant middle class,” Jelin said. “This is something Chris Christie just doesn’t understand.”

Christie held an education event in Newark earlier Wednesday with Mayor Cory Booker. Christie campaign spokesman Kevin Roberts responded to Buono’s criticism by saying the governor turned the state’s economy around ”from the total disaster it was” under former Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine.

“Under Governor Christie, we had the best year of job creation in a decade, and unemployment is at its lowest level since Buono’s time as budget chair (in the late 2000s),” Roberts said.   ”We still have more work to do, but Sen. Buono has offered nothing but a return to the failed Corzine-era policies she loves so much.”

He also said her comparison of Christie to Romney “doesn’t even make any sense.”

Poll: Christie increases lead over Buono among likely voters

Governor Christie has a 24 point lead over Democratic challenger Barbara Buono in the latest Quinnipiac University poll.

Governor Christie has a 34 point lead over Democratic challenger Barbara Buono in the latest Quinnipiac University poll.

Governor Christie grows his lead over Democrat Barbara Buono, who continues to struggle to boost her name recognition, according to a Quinnipiac University poll out today.

The Republican leads the Middlesex County state senator 64 points to 30 points among likely voters, a larger margin than his 20-point leads in Rutgers-Eagleton and Monmouth University/Asbury Park Press polls released this month.

Christie leads 69 to 23 percent among independent voters, and not surprisingly 94 to 3 percent with members of his own party. But he also leads among women voters, 61 to 32 percent. Buono has the backing of 60 percent of Democrats, but 35 percent say they plan to vote for Christie.

“Even a third of Democrats prefer Gov. Christopher Christie,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the polling institute, in a statement. “And, although the Buono campaign and Buono’s political background are big on women’s issues, even women favor Christie. So do men. There’s not even a very big gender gap.” Continue reading

Poll shows Booker still ahead, Lonegan gaining

New Quinnipiac University poll shows Booker still ahead, but Lonegan gaining

Democrat Cory Booker still has a “comfortable lead” over Republican Steve Lonegan among likely voters in the race for U.S. Senate, but a new Quinnipiac University poll shows Lonegan gaining after spending several weeks attacking the front-runner.

Booker had 53 percent to Lonegan’s 41 percent, according to the new poll in which Quinnipiac polled 948 likely voters between Sept. 19 and 22.

Lonegan had a slight lead of 48 percent to 46 percent among men, but Booker was overwhelmingly ahead, 60 percent to 34 percent, among women.
