United Nations Declarations and Goals

Through a series of goals, resolutions and declarations adopted by Member Nations of the United Nations, the world has a set of commitments, actions and goals to stop and reverse the spread of HIV and scale up towards universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services.

2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS

In 2001 Heads of State and Representatives of Governments issued the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS acknowledging that the AIDS epidemic constitutes a “global emergency and one of the most formidable challenges to human life and dignity.” It sets out a series of national targets and global actions to reverse the epidemic. Millennium Development Goals

In 2000, the largest gathering of world leaders at United Nations Headquarters in New York adopted the United Nations Millennium Declaration. Goal 6 of the Millennium Development Goals sets out by 2015 to have halted and begun to reverse the spread of HIV. More

UN Security Council

UN Security Council Resolutions

In 2000 the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1308 to limit the potentially damaging impact of HIV on the health of international peacekeeping personnel. In 2011 the UN Security Council reaffirmed its commitment to address the AIDS epidemic and adopted a new resolution that calls for increased efforts by UN Member States to address HIV in peacekeeping missions. UNAIDS launched on 20 November the 2012 global report on the AIDS epidemic and the 2012 World AIDS Day report which outlines some significant progress made in the AIDS response in recent years.
