David Yates In Final Talks For ‘Scarface’ Helm Now Universal “Very High” On Script

By NIKKI FINKE, Editor in Chief | Wednesday July 31, 2013 @ 11:20pm PDT

EXCLUSIVE: There’s a ton of curiosity and criticism about Universal‘s Scarface reboot since both the 1932 Chicago bootlegging film and 1983 Miami cocaine-dealing versions were so iconic. Understanding that, the studio according to my sources has been David Yatesrefining the script with several screenwriters and drafts while keeping all names and details under wraps. “Universal has been through a couple of drafts and now is very high on the current draft. The first stop is the director. This is before any conversations on talent or timing.” I’ve learned that the studio is in final talks with British director David Yates who directed the final four films in the Harry Potter film series (#s 5, 6, 7, and 8 from 2007-2011) – and in my opinion should have won some Oscar nominations for them as the franchise grew dark and interesting under his helming. Though he normally works at Warner Bros, Yates has been the subject of considerable chatter over which film projects he’d do next. A prolific TV director known for his gripping British TV six-part political thriller State Of Play (2003) and the Emmy-winning The Girl In The Café (2005), Yates is a founding member of Directors UK. He now is much in demand with the finish of the Harry Potter franchise. On Scarface, he will be tasked with updating the crime saga so it lives up to the Ben Hecht/Howard Hawks/Paul Muni and Oliver Stone/Brian De Palma/Al Pacino classics since both became part of popular culture. This is not a remake or sequel but a reboot of a crime kingpin who through a ruthless campaign of ambition goes in hot pursuit of his American Dream – whatever that is in this decade. Ethnicity and geography were important in the first two versions so expect the same here. Former Universal head Marc Shmuger and his Global Produce banner is producing along with Martin Bregman who produced the Pacino version.

Nikki Finke is currently on vacation.

TCA: ‘Lost Angels’ First Season Sets Up A “Fantastic Mystery”, Says TNT Exec

By THE DEADLINE TEAM | Wednesday July 31, 2013 @ 7:34pm PDT

Diane Haithman contributes to Deadline’s TCA coverage.

At today’s TCA panel on Frank Darabont’s new TNT series Lost Angels, Michael Wright, President, Head of Programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies, said he hopes the period noir crime series will return after its 6-episode first season, but never for more than, say, 12 episodes at a time.

After the late afternoon panel at Red Studios in Hollywood, the executive joked “never say never,” but said he would like to see the series return to TNT for limited runs each December. He called the project a hybrid between an old-school miniseries and traditional longer season of episodes. He said some limited series seem perfect for summer but for this one “we would want to keep it in December.” Wright said the 6 first season episodes complete a story but “set up a beautiful Season 2.” During the session, he did not provide details but said the first 6 episodes will establish a “fantastic mystery established in the pilot that will invest you in the outcome.” Read More »

Ryan Kwanten & ‘Knights Of Badassdom’ Director Team For Marvel Fan Film ‘Truth In Journalism’: Video

By JEN YAMATO | Wednesday July 31, 2013 @ 4:40pm PDT

Ryan Kwanten Truth in Journalism VenomFirst unveiled at Comic-Con, the 17-minute short Truth in Journalism is scoring with the geek crowd after debuting online today with a Marvel-ous twist. Filmmaker Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2) tapped his Knights of Badassdom star Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) for the faux cinema verite pic, which is shot through the lens of a foreign docu crew shadowing a reporter from crime scene to crime scene a la 1992′s Man Bites Dog. That reporter is Eddie Brock, a name that should perk up comic book fanatics’ ears. (Hint: Topher Grace played the fan fave Venom in Sony’s Spider-Man 3.)

The original concept was conceived by producer Adi Shankar (The Grey, Dredd), then fleshed out by writer-director Lynch to include painstaking details from the Marvel comics universe. Those include crafting a NYC circa 1988 setting with a fan’s scrutiny for details, including references from “Amazing Spider Man #299-300 and some very iconic buildings in the background if you look very closely,” Lynch tells me. He shot with DP Will Barratt on the RED recreating the 16mm look and feel of Man Bites Dog. “This was totally for fun, a way to just do ‘one for us’ with little to no interference,” says Lynch, whose Knights of Badassdom is being released by EOne – without his involvement – after languishing in post/distribution hell for two years. TCA: Hulu Pitches New Seth Meyers Animated Series

By LISA DE MORAES, TV Columnist | Wednesday July 31, 2013 @ 4:35pm PDT

Hulu came to the press tour today to preach New Model and show off some of its new programming. TV critics showed up in dribs and drabs. Those who came stuck around until the final session — but that’s only because it included Seth Meyers and they wanted to ask him about — NBC’s Saturday Night Live. This morning, Hulu was pitching:

*The Wrong Mans – a comedy/thriller from James Corden and Matthew Baynton about two lowly office workers who become caught in a deadly criminal conspiracy when one of them finds a ringing cell phone at the scene of a horrific car crash.

*Behind The Mask –  a documentary about sports mascots.

*Quickdraw — a  half hour Western/CSI spoof about a Harvard-educated sheriff trying to introduce the emerging science of forensics to an unruly Kansas town in the late 19th century.

SAG-AFTRA Fires Back In $110M Foreign Residuals Lawsuit

By DOMINIC PATTEN | Wednesday July 31, 2013 @ 3:21pm PDT

More than two months after former union president Ed Asner and over a dozen others filed suit claiming the union had not properly disbursed $110 million in foreign residuals, SAG-AFTRA today took formal aim at their case. In motions filed Wednesday in federal court (read it here), SAG-AFTRA argues that most of the suit should be dismissed. “What plaintiffs fail to mention in the 52 pages of their complaint is that much of the challenges they raise to SAG-AFTRA’s residuals collection and distribution programs has already been resolved in a judicially approved settlement of virtually identical allegations in a class action lawsuit,” says the nearly 30-page filing. “The instant lawsuit is a virtual verbatim restatement of the settled Osmond litigation,” it adds. That 2007 action by Ken Osmond of Leave It To Beaver fame and other actors was resolved back in 2010. They had accused SAG at the time of not properly paying out $8.1 million in overseas royalties.
