James Cameron Has Found ‘Avatar’s Darth Vader: It’s Stephen Lang

By MIKE FLEMING JR | Tuesday October 22, 2013 @ 10:50am PDT
Mike Fleming

EXCLUSIVE: Even though Stephen Lang‘s Colonel Miles Quaritch character seemed to have run his course in 20th Century Fox’s Avatar, director James Cameron has revealed that Lang is not only returning for the sequel, he’s going to be part of the next three blockbuster films. It sounds like he’s the closest thing to a mix between Star Wars’ Darth Vader and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator character.

“Steven was so memorable in the first film, we’re privileged to have him back,” Cameron said. “I’m not going to say exactly HOW we’re bringing him back, but it’s a science fiction story, after all. His character will evolve into really unexpected places across the arc of our new three-film saga. I really look forward to working with such a gifted actor, who’s also become a good friend.”

Cameron has been working out brainy plot details since the beginning of his career–how many times has the time travel concept from the original Terminator film been swiped over the years–so I’ll bet he’s come up with something thrilling. As for Lang, he’s been turning in memorable performances since going back to the Michael Mann TV series Crime Story and in character roles in films like White Irish Drinkers. Good on Lang, who’s repped by Innovative.

Deadline revealed that Cameron was going to shoot three movies one after the other, and that he had set War Of The Worlds scribe Josh Friedman to write one; Rise Of Planet Of The Apes‘ Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver to write another; and Salinger writer/director Shane Salerno to script the third, in what is the most ambitious production schedule since Peter Jackson shot The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit in succession.

Fox Hires Simon Andreae To Replace Mike Darnell As Reality TV Chief

By LISA DE MORAES, TV Columnist | Tuesday October 22, 2013 @ 9:59am PDT

Simon Andreae, the former Channel 4 exec in the UK, and former Discovery Channel exec in Los Angeles, and a guy best known for programs that mulled why the RMS Titanic sank and whether God created the universe, but also the first televised human autopsy, first televised exorcism and, of course, the series Naked And Afraid, is replacing the Fox exec crowned Point Man For Perversity by The New York Times, Mike Darnell.

Andreae, in August, announced that after an eight-year stint in the U.S., he’d launched Scarlet Media and would be returning to the UK with a contract with Sony Pictures TV, reporting to SPT exec Andrea Wong, who used to head reality TV at ABC. Based in London, Andreae would develop factual and factual entertainment formats and specials for British TV and international markets.

While, for public consumption, Andreae is replacing Darnell, the job is smaller than it was under Darnell — and pays less, which eliminated a few of the candidates who’d been in talks, sources report. Andreae will oversee development; Fox veteran David Hill will hang on to the network’s current reality franchises American Idol and The X Factor. That’s maybe just as well for Andreae, given that the two singing competitions had become something of a high-class headache for Darnell, what with Idol’s numbers still good but tumbling, and X’s promised gimongus crowd continuing to not show up for a third season, despite yet another judge-panel makeover. RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Bones’ Ticks Up With Wedding, ‘The Voice’ & ‘Dancing’ Dip

By NELLIE ANDREEVA | Tuesday October 22, 2013 @ 9:54am PDT
Nellie Andreeva

Fox last night gave promising new drama Sleepy Hollow two extra weeks of Bones lead-in in November before a newcomer, Almost Human, comes into the Monday 8 PM slot. The Headless Horseman drama sure could use the reprieve because its fifth episode last Monday would’ve been the last original with a Bones lead-in. It was a special episode of Bones last night, featuring the eight-seasons-in-the-making Booth and Brennan wedding. The veteran dramedy only got a modest bump (5%, to a 2.1 rating in adults 18-49). Still, Sleepy Hollow would’ve benefited by following it with an original. Instead, the drama aired a repeat because of its complex production that didn’t allow for a sixth episode to be completed for last night’s airing. Sleepy Hollow will again stay dark next Monday for the World Series, making it a two-week break five weeks into the series run. Those lengthy hiatuses early in the run of new series are disruptive (Fox’s New Girl never recovered from a series of early pre-emptions). They also allow time-slot competitors to get stronger by wooing available eyeballs. Fortunately for Sleepy Hollow, it is a heavily DVR-ed show that is likely already locked on people’s season passes.

The lack of a new Sleepy Hollow seems to have helped CBS’ 9-11 PM block. The network’s fast nationals were inflated by an NFL pre-emption in Minnesota. Still, while How I Met Your Mother (2.9) at 8 PM was down a tenth from its fast national last week, and 2 Broke Girls (2.6) at 8:30 PM was flat, a The Big Bang Theory repeat (2.5) at 9 PM jumped 14% from last Monday’s rerun, while Mom (2.4) at 9:30 PM shot up by 20% and is expected to stay in positive territory in the finals. The tide lifted even Hostages (1.4, up 17%), though it may end up even week to week in the finals. Read More »

TV Guide Magazine Owner OpenGate Capital Forms Media Acquisition Unit With Jack Kliger And David Fishman

By DAVID LIEBERMAN, Financial Editor | Tuesday October 22, 2013 @ 7:58am PDT

A lot of moving pieces here: In conjunction with the announcement about the new venture, OpenGate Capital named Jack Kliger CEO of TV Guide Magazine — he had been “acting CEO” since 2009 — with David Fishman becoming COO. The execs know their way around the business. Kliger was a long-time honcho at Advance Publications where he helped launch Conde Net, and was publisher of Glamour and GQ. And Fishman had been CEO of Hachette Filipacci Media’s television subsidiary RTM Productions. OpenGate says that the new collaboration will create “an efficient platform for the pursuit of media assets in need of significant rejuvenation or strategic repositioning.” Partner Robert Lezec adds that TV Guide Magazine “has been profitable for the past three years while the magazine industry continues to experience significant upheaval. We will take the same prudent strategy that is applied to OpenGate’s other portfolio companies and apply it to the new media assets we will either acquire or manage.” Here’s OpenGate’s release: Read More »

Ryan Kavanaugh Aligns Relativity With Major League Gaming

By MIKE FLEMING JR | Tuesday October 22, 2013 @ 7:42am PDT
Mike Fleming

Relativity Media‘s Ryan Kavanaugh has aligned with e-sports enterprise Major League Gaming and joined its board of directors. I am not sure where all this sports e-stuff is going, but it certainly bolsters Kavanaugh’s credentials if, for instance, he was vying to become commissioner of your fantasy football league. Actually, Relativity Sports has become one of Kavanaugh’s biggest business, repping over 300 athletes and growing. This alliance, he hopes, will allow him to marry his sports and content creation businesses.

Relativity and Major League Gaming (MLG), the global leader in eSports, today announced a strategic content and marketing partnership across sports management, television, film and digital media. In addition, Ryan Kavanaugh, CEO of Relativity, has joined the MLG Board of Directors, working with the MLG executive team to further the company’s position as a mainstream media property and breakout sport of the future.

The collaboration will accelerate MLG’s growth, drive appointment viewing and further strengthen Relativity’s presence in the gaming space through MLG’s deep engagement with the elusive young male audience. The two companies will work together in a variety of ways including:

‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ To Open In China On November 21

By DAVID LIEBERMAN, Financial Editor | Tuesday October 22, 2013 @ 7:01am PDT

So much for the speculation that Lionsgate might wait until 2014 to take the film to China. Hunger Games: Catching Fire will open day-and-date with the global release unlike the first film, which was delayed for three months. The initial Hunger Games generated $27M in China, and the new one — which will also appear in IMAX —  likely “will do materially better,” Stifel analyst Benjamin Mogil says. It’ll be a big week for film goers in China: The new Hunger Games opens a day after the premiere there of Warner Bros’ Gravity.

Here’s Lionsgate’s announcement:

SANTA MONICA, CA, October 22, 2013 – Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF), a leading global entertainment company, announced today that the second installment of its global blockbuster The Hunger Games franchise, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, has been approved for a November 21, 2013 release on more than 3,000 screens in China.

Hollywood Film Awards: Oscar Hopefuls Turn Out In Force But Does It Have Any Impact?

Pete Hammond

Nancy O’Dell, host for the 17th annual Hollywood Film Awards on Monday night at the Beverly Hilton, looked across the impressive star-studded room and said, “This is just like the Oscars”. Uh, not exactly. It’s not just like the Golden Globes or The Critics Choice Awards either, but it’s become a pretty good warm-up act for all of them. ”We used to make fun of this show, but not so much anymore,” said one industry observer. In fact the cover of the slick program says it all: “First mandatory stop in the awards season”. And this brainchild of Carlos de Abreu, who is the arbiter and chief negotiator of who gets what, has really been growing. The studios seem to love it because they essentially get to dictate the winners and plant a flag for one film or another early in the season. No one takes the actual award too seriously, but getting the opportunity to be seen holding that award is another thing altogether.

In its early days, stars would come in the back of the Hilton, make an appearance onstage to accept an award and get a photo op, and then make a hasty retreat. Now, most of them stayed all night for the nearly three-and-a-half hour show, schmoozing, seeing old friends and subtly campaigning. One person at the Disney table where I was sitting (director Dan Scanlon won the Hollywood Animation Award for Pixar’s smash sequel Monsters University) put it succinctly, saying about the appeal of this show: “If they show up, it’s worth it. If they don’t show up, it’s not worth it”. They showed up.

And there was lots of high star-wattage in the room including various winners like Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Julia Roberts, Harrison Ford and Jared Leto, plus presenters like Sean Penn, Robert Downey Jr, Kanye West, Geoffrey Rush, Bruce Willis, Jennifer Garner, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Jane Fonda, Forest Whitaker and others. Hollywood Song Award winner Chris Martin of Coldplay even performed his tune Atlas from the upcoming The Hunger Games:  Catching Fire, the first song the group has written for a film.

Studio heads like 20th Century Fox’s Jim Gianopulos, Warner Bros’ Kevin Tsujihara, Fox Searchlight’s Nancy Utley, Sony Pictures Classics’ Tom Bernard and Harvey Weinstein were also in the room for the show which has never been televised — but will be next year according to an announcement by O’Dell. Dick Clark Productions, which also produces the Globes,  has now got a stake in the event and plans to start exploiting it in 2014. Just how it will all play on TV is anybody’s guess when there are no nominees only winners, and most of the viewers will not have seen any of the movies rewarded on this very early mid-October Hollywood lovefest (hell, not many of the industry audience or even the presenters had seen most of the films yet).
