‘The Killing’s Mireille Enos Joins MGM’s ‘If I Stay’

EXCLUSIVE: Mireille Enos is in talks to join Chloe Moretz in MGM’s If I Stay for director RJ Cutler. The film, an adaptation of the Gayle Forman novel, follows a teenager who is in a coma after a car accident that devastates her family. Enos will play ‘Kat,’ the girl’s free-spirited mother who is fiercely passionate about her family and rock music.

Enos recently completed production on Season 3 of AMC’s The Killing, and World War Z. Up next, she stars in the Atom Egoyan-directed Devil’s Knot, which will premiere in Toronto. She also has two films in the pipeline: Sabotage, due out in late January 2014, and Queen Of The Night, opposite Ryan Reynolds. She is repped by CAA, Gartner/Green Entertainment at attorney Mitch Smelkinson.

BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson and Piv Bernth, head of drama at Danish broadcaster DR, home of the original The Killing and The Bridge, shared their views on co-productions this morning in Cannes. The duo, who each work for public broadcasters, also touched on dealing with U.S. partners and the courage of their convictions. Scandinavia is a hot spot for drama, but Bernth says she only gets 4% of DR’s budget for drama so she’s “working with all kinds of different partners” and “trying to keep our feet on the ground.” She also confirmed that Killing creator Soren Sveistrup is working on a project for Cinemax, which he’ll present to the network within the next month.

Stephenson is careful to avoid the dreaded “Europudding,” or what he terms “Mid-Atlantic pudding,” but says, “In the past, all countries thought their drama was their drama, but today actually we all have quite a lot in common.” Even “the best microscopic local drama” can feel universal. Stephenson pointed to Downton Abbey, which is an ITV show, and to the BBC’s Sherlock as examples. They “are so British in their sensibility. They’re as English as English can get and that shows that if you do something well for your own country, the idea has attraction for abroad.” If Sherlock had been made expressly for international, Stephenson told me recently, it would have been cast differently. In the early days of the show, he said there were concerns that Benedict Cumberbatch’s high-functioning sociopath would not be embraced. “Couldn’t he be slightly nicer? Netflix Pacts For ‘The Killing’ Season 3

After lengthy negotiations, Netflix has closed a deal with The Killing producer Fox Television Studios for the upcoming third season of the mystery drama, which premieres on AMC later this year. Under the pact, Netflix will be the exclusive subscription TV service for The Killing Season 3 and will begin streaming it three months after the third-season finale airs on AMC. That is an unusually short window for SVOD distribution of a cable series, which is usually tied to a season’s release on DVD around the following season’s premiere — about a year after the original TV run. I hear getting The Killing early was important for Netflix and key in getting the streaming service on board. The complete Season 2 of The Killing became available to Netflix members in the U.S. yesterday, joining Season 1, which launched on Netflix in 2012. “We’re excited to see The Killing back on TV and we’re especially proud to bring Season 3 to our members so soon after it premieres on AMC,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer. “The Killing is a terrific serialized drama and we know our members love these high-quality shows.”

Fox TV Studios president David Madden said that the agreement with Netflix “played an extremely significant part in the studio’s strategy that enabled us to bring The Killing back for a third season.” Indeed, after AMC originally opted not to order a third season, FtvS held complex parallel talks with AMC and Netflix, with a second revenue stream from Netflix in addition to the license fee from AMC allowing the studio to proceed with production on Season 3, which is currently underway. It’s Official: ‘The Killing’ Returns To AMC For Third Season With Self-Contained New Case

After months of negotiations, AMC and Fox Television Studios have closed a deal to bring back previously cancelled The Killing to AMC for a third season. Negotiations with Netflix for a second window to the series are still ongoing. As part of the new deal with AMC, Veena Sud, who developed the adaptation of the Danish series and ran the first two seasons, returns as executive producer, writer and showrunner along with stars Mireille Enos (Sarah Linden) and Joel Kinnaman (Stephen Holder). After the show received backlash from viewers for stretching the resolution of the case from the first season into Season 2, the producers are committing that the new mystery in Season 3 will be resolved over the course of 12 episodes. Production on Season 3 begins February 25 in Vancouver.

A year after closing the Rosie Larsen case, Linden is no longer a detective. The Killing Season 3 Netflix AMCEXCLUSIVE: It looks like The Killing will be coming back for a third season after all. Two and a half months after AMC opted not to renew the mystery drama for a third season, I hear the cable network is close to a deal to bring the show back, this time in tandem with streaming giant Netflix. I hear AMC would get first window.

A deal, which is still being hammered out, would be the culmination of a relentless effort by The Killing producer Fox TV Studios to keep the series alive. When The Killing‘s cancellation was announced, the studio vowed to “try to find another home for the show” and talked with a number of potential buyers before zeroing in on Netflix. The talks, which were touch and go for awhile, subsequently brought AMC back into the equation. I hear a strong third-season pitch by series’ developer/executive producer Veena Sud helped get the modestly-rated drama back on the cable network which will now share its The Killing-associated costs with Netflix. Fox TV Studios already had the cast, including breakout stars Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman, locked in for Season 3, which also made a renewal an easier proposition. I hear feelers are now being sent out to key behind-the-scene auspices to return, and Season 3 is eying a February production start. AMC, Netflix and FtvS declined comment.

The split window deal for The Killing resembles that for NBC’s critically praised drama Friday Night Lights, which was on the verge of cancellation after Season 2 before the broadcast network partnered with DirecTV.
