Shiri Appleby To Topline Lifetime Pilot ‘Unreal’

By NELLIE ANDREEVA | Friday September 20, 2013 @ 8:16pm PDT
Nellie Andreeva

EXCLUSIVE: Shiri Appleby is set as the lead in Lifetime’s drama pilot Unreal, inspired by Sarah Gertrude Shapiro’s award-winning independent short Sequin Raze. Marti Noxon and Shapiro wrote Unreal, which goes behind the scenes of a hit competition dating show to follow the experiences of a young staffer (Appleby) whose sole job is to manipulate her relationships with (and among) the contestants to get the vital dramatic and outrageous footage the program’s producers demand. What ensues is a humorous yet vexing look at what happens in the world of unscripted television, where being a contestant can be vicious and producing it is a whole other reality. Appleby, repped by Gersh and manager John Carrabino, has recurring roles on HBO comedy Girls and NBC drama Chicago Fire.

UPDATE: ABC Family President Michael Riley To Exit; Kate Juergens In Mix As Replacement

By NELLIE ANDREEVA | Friday September 20, 2013 @ 1:00pm PDT
Nellie Andreeva

UPDATE 1 PM: The search for Michael Riley‘s replacement is still in the nascent stages, but his No. 2, EVP Original Programming and Development and Chief Creative Officer Kate Juergens, is being talked about as a logical choice. The main question is whether, following her recent promotion to a Chief Creative Officer, Juergens would want the top job. The situation is reminiscent of that at sibling Disney Channel, where the top creative executive, Gary Marsh, did not go for the president job when Rich Ross left to run Disney Studios. After the job became vacant again two years later when Carolina Lightcap left, Marsh took over. Juergens similarly had been ABC Family’s top development executive but did not make a play for the president position when Paul Lee left in 2010. Will she do it now?

PREVIOUS 12:05 PM: Michael Riley is leaving ABC Family after a three-year stint as president. The move comes on the heels of a strong summer for the cable network, which launched two breakout new series, The Fosters and Twisted, both of which have received back orders. Anne Sweeney, President, Disney/ABC Television Group, has asked Riley to stay on during the search for his replacement. Riley, who for the past few months has been commuting between Los Angeles and London, where his partner had relocated, is expected to look for opportunities in the international marketplace where he worked before joining Disney in 2008. (His experience in the arena includes stints as VP and general manager, Turner Broadcasting System France, and SVP and GM, Turner Broadcasting, Europe, Middle East and Africa). Read More »

NBC’s Bob Greenblatt Renews Contract Through 2017

By NELLIE ANDREEVA | Friday September 20, 2013 @ 12:18pm PDT
Nellie Andreeva

This is a major vote of confidence for the top NBC executive just days before the start of the new broadcast season and more than a year before Bob Greenblatt‘s current contract was to expire. The news will silence speculation about the future of Greenblatt as the network’s ratings turnaround is still work in progress. Greenblatt is very well liked by NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke and Comcast brass and has been enjoying unwavering support even when things were not going so well for NBC in early 2013. While contract renewals not always spell a long tenure (as NBC’s dismissal of Kevin Reilly shortly after signing a new 3-year deal showed), the contract extension for Greenblatt is a clear indication that Comcast is sticking to its word that it sees NBC as a long-term investment and will be patient, trusting Greenblatt and his team to turn the ship around. It also assures stability on the TV side of NBCUniversal on the heels of the shakeup at Universal Pictures last week.

By NELLIE ANDREEVA | Thursday September 19, 2013 @ 5:34pm PDT
Nellie Andreeva

EXCLUSIVE: This is kind of timely with the current US-Russia cooperation in the effort to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons.
