The Artist from director Michel Hazanavicius earned the Audience Award (Narrative) while Marc Levin’s Hard Times: Lost on Long Island was honored with the Audience Award (Documentary) to pace winners at the 19th Annual Hamptons International Film Festival announced tonight. Also taking home an Audience Award was Two’s a Crowd from directors Jim Isler and Tom Isler (for Best Short), while The Fairy – directed by Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon — was selected as winner of the Golden Starfish Narrative Feature Award. The Golden Starfish for Best Documentary went to Fellipe Barbosa’s Laura. Other winners included: The Strange Ones, from directors Christopher Radcliff and Lauren Wolkstein (Short Documentary Jury Winner); Without, from director Mark Jackson (Kodak Award for Best Cinematography and the Wouter Barendrecht Pioneering Vision Award); and You’ve Been Trumped, from director Anthony Baxter (Victor Rabinowitz and Joanne Grant Award for Social Justice). UPDATE: If Steven Soderbergh really is determined to retire from filmmaking, he’s not doing a very good job of it. He’s been so prolific lately that he’s like the Natalie Portman of directors. Now, he has just committed to direct Channing Tatum in Magic Mike, a story of friendship set in the world of male strippers. Tatum plays the title character, who schools a young dancer in how to hustle on and off the stage. It’s a wild summer of dancing, partying and women. The inspiration for the film is Channing’s own experiences as a stripper when he was 19. Nick Wechsler is producing with Gregory Jacobs, Tatum and Reid Carolin. Carolin is writing the script.
“When Channing talked to me about this, I thought it was one of the best ideas I’d ever heard for a movie,” Soderbergh said in a statement. “I said I wanted in immediately. MGM Re-Ups DVD Deal With Fox Through 2016
One day after making a deal to co-finance the next two James Bond films and other feature films over the next five years, MGM chiefs Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum solidified another piece of the reawakening studio’s puzzle by renewing its DVD deal with Fox through 2016. Here’s the official announcement:
LOS ANGELES, CA April 14, 2011 – MGM announced today that the company has renewed its worldwide Blu-ray Disc and DVD distribution pact with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment through 2016. As part of the new agreement, Fox will now oversee electronic-sell-through for MGM titles and will continue to handle MGM’s vast and extensive movie and television library, as well as distribute several upcoming new release productions in the home entertainment market, including the next JAMES BOND film, set for global theatrical release on November 9, 2012.”
“Twentieth Century Fox is a valued partner that has taken great care of the MGM library for many years with the highest degree of integrity,” said Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, Co-Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers of MGM. “They are a tremendous asset to the studio as we look towards the future.”

Theater Owners: We’re Pissed, But No Boycott
Washington, D.C. (April 14, 2011)—The National Association of Theatre Owners does not and could not encourage its members to engage in any boycotts of any movies distributed by any company. Recent press reports to the contrary are completely false.
In an article published on April 13 in The Guardian, it was suggested that NATO indicated that cinema operators were prepared not to screen movies, and specifically referenced the coming Harry Potter film. No one from The Guardian contacted NATO before the original article was published. At our request, The Guardian did later change the article to remove the erroneous reference to the Harry Potter film.
Then later on April 13, the blog “Business Insider” entitled “Harry Potter 8 Dropped From Theaters?” suggested that NATO “is threatening to drop some of this summer’s biggest blockbusters” and that “screens under NATO are threatening to boycott upcoming studio releases, starting with Warner Bros. sure to be box office-gargantuan Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.” Again, these stories, and others that have followed, are completely false and no one from the organizations responsible for the stories contacted anyone at NATO.
