When her mother disappears, Clary Fray learns that she descends from a line of warriors who protect our world from demons. She joins forces with others like her and heads into a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld.

The Buzz: Cassandra Clare's six-novel Mortal Instruments series seems to possess enough dark magic, secret family histories, and love-triangle dynamics to please fans of both Harry Potter and Twilight, and casting Lily Collins as Clary Fray seems like a wise move in the post-Bella Swan era. Sony is looking to build a franchise, and it's ultimately not surprising to see Harald Zwart, who helped turn The Karate Kid into an over-performing worldwide hit, in the director's chair. If the initial formula works, look for this story to get even cooler as it progresses.

Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival.

The Buzz: The cherry atop Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's "Blood and Ice Cream" trilogy has us all guessing if the threat will be some sort of natural disaster or an alien invasion -- or something else entirely? Personally, I'm hoping for at least one overt From Dusk Till Dawn homage.

Certificate R   -   Horror | Thriller

Metascore: 71/100 (5 reviews)
When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.

The Buzz: Adam Wingard belongs to the current wave of indie horror filmmakers who dominate the film festival circuit while distributors are figuring out the best way to get the most people to see movies such as V/H/S . You're Next, which Wingard made with his writing/producing partner Simon Barrett before the craze went industry-wide, reunites the principal cast from their serial-killer shocker A Horrible Way to Die.

The story of martial-arts master Ip Man, the man who trained Bruce Lee.

The Buzz: Kung-fu aficionados have been waiting for Wong Kar Wai's new work for over ten years (he "announced" the project back in 2002); you have to travel back to 1994 for his last action piece, Dung che sai duk. Fitting, then, that he's putting his unique narrative spin on the genre's chief legend -- that of Ip Man, the Wing Chun master who mentored Bruce Lee -- and reuniting Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's Zhang Ziyi and Chang Chen. A probable worldwide smash, the film could turn out to be WKW's best performer in the U.S. -- especially if Harvey Weinstein puts his full weight behind it.

Luke and Kate are co-workers at a Chicago brewery, where they spend their days drinking and flirting. They're perfect for each other, except that they're both in relationships. Luke is in the midst of marriage talks with his girlfriend of six years, Kate is playing it cool with her music producer boyfriend Chris. But you know what makes the line between "friends" and "more than friends" really blurry? Beer.

The Buzz: Imagine if you were a self-employed creative type, really productive, and most of the time someone bought your work, and if not, you just put out the work on your own. Those are pretty much the modes Joe Swanberg operates in -- do you know he's made a dozen movies over the past three years? There are more familiar faces starring in his latest, which explores similar tricky romantic themes seen in his earlier scenarios. Personally, I tend to like it when characters and subplots come and go from Swanberg's projects, but it will be interesting to see how people react as his audience expands. Oh, and he co-stars in another release this week, You're Next.

A 20-something supervising staff member of a foster care facility navigates the troubled waters of that world alongside her co-worker and longtime boyfriend.

The Buzz: Destin Cretton's last film, I Am Not a Hipster, came and went, but his latest has made some inroads thanks to Brie Larson's lead performance and a supporting appearance by Keith Stanfield, who was also in Cretton's short version of this feature.

Tensions rise between lifelong friends Mitchell and Carter after their truck breaks down on an isolated desert road as they start to attack each other's life decisions with unwavering brutality.

The Buzz: A pair of frustrated, middle-class white dudes breaking down in the desert? I'd rather re-watch I Melt with You twice. But good for Josh Duhamel and Dan Fogler for earning solid reviews on the festival circuit.
