Rihanna's Sexy Soldier Style: Not Fit for Combat of Any Kind!

just now | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Imagine if G.I. Jane trained in the fatigues Rihanna is wearing? We have a feeling she'd have a few more bumps and bruises all over her body. The "Diamonds" singer stepped out wearing some items from her new collection—Rihanna for River Island, though they look more like "Rihanna for the U.S. Military." The skin-tight leggings and white bra top may be more fit for the gym than the jungle, but either way they're not fit for what the "Stay" singer is actually doing—lunch at a cafe. Frankly, we're tired of ragging on Rihanna for inappropriate attire. Instead we'll focus on her odd choice of advertising. The waist band of these pants and bra top say Ri-Ri all the way »

The Story of the Empire State Building Is Becoming a Movie

14 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Cue the Jay-z: The Hollywood Reporter writes that Warner Bros. picked up Thomas Kelly’ 2006 novel Empire Rises about an “epic love triangle set in 1930 just as construction on the iconic building begins” for development. Also a writer and producer on Copper, Kelly will write the screen adaptation with Peter Eskelsen producing and Guy Ritchie rumored to direct, just as soon as he replaces Soderbergh on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and wraps that Treasure Island adaptation. If all goes well, perhaps sweeping features that romanticize construction of world's tallest structures will become the next big thing. If that's the case, we'll happily pitch Eiffel Dreams or Golden Gate Crossing to any studio who'll listen. »

Al Jazeera America Begins Uphill Struggle for U.S. Toehold

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

A serious-minded news channel, with a name — Al Jazeera America — that’s almost an invitation to Islamophobia? What, were the names “Please Don’t Watch Us” or “This Will Cause a Painful Rash” taken?

Al Jazeera America made its debut Tuesday, kicking off its uphill slog in about half of cable/satellite homes with a program titled “This is Al Jazeera: Preview Hour,” as glossy and slick as any corporate video. The launch contained all the expected bells and whistles, from snazzy graphics to pre-produced packages, including a look at the awful working conditions in Bangladesh and questions related to decriminalizing pot in Washington state.

Ultimately, though, the new channel is facing major challenges on two tracks: Its stated plan to provide serious news, with a reputation for international coverage, when Americans are not known for being particularly curious about the wider world; and a profile many associate, rightly or wrongly, »

Emmy cliffhanger: Will 'The Amazing Race' triumph for a tenth time?

1 hour ago | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

In the Emmy race for Best Reality-Competition Program, we've become accustomed over the past decade to hearing the same phrase over and over again: "And the Emmy goes to 'The Amazing Race'!" Nine times it's zoomed over the Emmy finish line first and now it's jockeying for a tenth victory in 11 years. Only one show -- "Top Chef" -- managed to overtake it. That was back in 2010 and "The Amazing Race" rebounded the very next year to continue building upon its impressive Emmy haul. Now competing it against "The Amazing Race" are nine-time nominee "Project Runway," eight-time contender "Dancing With the Stars," thrice-recognized "So You Think You Can Dance" and last year's buzzy newcomer "The Voice." Three of these series are also nominated in the Best Reality Host category, and you can read their episode submissions and analyses here. --Widge »

See James Franco's Face Superimposed On Famous Paintings

1 hour ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Now that word’s gotten out about this social media thing, it looks like stars have decided to forego traditional press channels and just go it alone, announcing new projects through something called the Internet (see Prince’s Twittter-bait announcement earlier this week). Tuesday night, the notoriously bizarre James Franco reminded us via Instagram that he has a new show coming with a photo that puts his face over a Vincent Van Gogh self-portrait. The post follows Monday's addition of Franco over the Mona Lisa (with a mustache, natch) and the words "new TV series about art duuuh."Now, we’ve long known that Franco sees himself as an artiste and all, but isn’t this a little much? We’d say so, especially considering that the actor/director/poet/perpetual co-ed’s best work actually comes when he’s playing a stoner. Then again, it’s also possible tomorrow »

Palme d'Or winner 'Blue Is the Warmest Color' gets Nc-17 rating

"Blue Is the Warmest Color" has been stamped with the dreaded Nc-17 rating - not that the film's U.S. distributor seems worried. "The film is first and foremost a film about love, coming of age and passion. We refuse to compromise [director Abdellatif] Kechiche's vision by trimming the film for an R rating, and we have every confidence that 'Blue Is the Warmest Color' will play in theaters around the country regardless," said Sundance Selects and IFC Films President Jonathan Sehring in a statement. "An Nc-17 rating no longer holds the stigma it once did, and we look forward to bringing »

The film will be released on Oct. 25, after upcoming screenings at the Toronto and New York Film Festivals. "This is a landmark film with two of the best female performances we have »

Rashida Jones Is Developing a New Show for the CW

2 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Now that Rashida Jones is leaving Pawnee, we can expect her to use that two-year pod deal from Warner Brothers to focus on her writing. The Parks and Rec star just sold an hour-long dramedy titled Ladyballs to the CW, a script order that marks a second sale for her and Celeste & Jesse Forever writing/producing partner Will McCormack (Fox gave the pair a put-pilot commitment for a comedy called Stuck). From the description, Ladyballs seems like pretty standard fare for the younger-skewing network: It “revolves around two twenty-something estranged friends in search of love in New York who are reunited after learning that they've been dating the same guy. When their plot to humiliate the two-timer goes viral, they realize the ‘payback’ business is a lucrative one and set up a clandestine business to continue bringing down the hand of justice for those who have been wronged.” To write and produce this revenge dramedy, »

Dr. Phil Asks If It's Okay to Have Sex With Drunk Girls

2 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

In an extremely misguided crowdsourcing exercise, Dr. Phil’s account sent out the following query earlier this evening:  “If a girl is drunk, is it Ok to have sex with her? Reply yes or no to @drphil #teensaccused.” As you can surely imagine, Twitter had quite the reaction to Dr. Phil's casual musing on sexual assault, and the usually tame #DrPhilQuestions blew up with posts that ran the gamut from outraged to hysterical – something we also saw with #PaulasBestDishes back in June when news of her lawsuit broke. According to BuzzFeed, Dr. Phil’s team said tonight’s now-deleted post was “intended to evoke discussion leading into a very serious [upcoming] show topic.” A spokesperson then removed any belief that the team has 140 characters worth of competency by adding that the tweet “was not intended to be taken lightly. It's based upon a recent news story, hence the #teensaccused label. »

Jennifer Aniston Recycles Red Bikini in Mexico, Looks as Hot as She Did the First Time

Déjà vu, anyone? Jennifer Aniston was spotted strutting a sexy red bikini during her Mexican getaway with fiancé Justin Theroux today, but her little number looked very familiar, and then we realized why—Jen's a repeat offender! Like Kate Middleton, Britney Spears and other fashionable celebs, Aniston chose to rock recycled fashion on her trip. The actress, who showed off her toned and tanned figure in the tiny two-piece with her hair pinned back, was first seen wearing this exact swimsuit in December. Even better, the older photograph was also taken while she was vacationing in Cabo San Lucas with her soon-to-be hubby and it seems like she chose to wear the same sarong, as »

'Blue Is the Warmest Color,' Palme d'Or-Winning Lesbian Love Story, Gets Nc-17 Rating

Blue Is the Warmest Color, the lesbian love story that won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, has been rated Nc-17 by the MPAA’s Classification & Ratings Administration. Rather than contest the rating, cut the film or release it without a rating, distributor Sundance Selects announced Tuesday that it will release the film beginning Oct. 25 with the restrictive Nc-17 rating. The adults-only rating means that no one 17 and under will be admitted to the film. Blue received the rating for “explicit sexual content.” Photos: Inside the Cannes Awards Ceremony Since Sundance
