Fox Rebuffs Asian-American Group's Request to Re-Shoot 'Dads' Pilot

14 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Fox has decided to keep the pilot of its upcoming comedy "Dads" intact, declining a request from the Media Action Network for Asian Americans to re-shoot scenes the group perceived as racially insensitive. In a response letter to the group's request, Fox chief operating officer Joe Earley and entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly acknowledged the group's concerns, but stated that comedy is "subjective" and that the show is "striving to create a series with humor that works on multiple levels and 'earns' its audaciousness." ‘Under the Dome’ Steady for CBS, Tops Monday Night Ratings

14 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

After slipping to a low last week, CBS drama “Under the Dome” held steady last night and was easily Monday’s top series in key demos.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, “Under the Dome” averaged a 2.4 rating/7 share in adults 18-49 and 10.3 million viewers overall — matching last week’s averages. The show delivered its best local-market rating in New York (a 2.15 in adults 18-49) since before the start of the Time Warner blackout, which is limiting viewership of the network in Gotham as well as Los Angeles and Dallas.

“Dome” again had to build sharply from its lead-in, as CBS fared modestly from 8 to 10 p.m. with repeats of “How I Met Your Mother” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall), “Mike & Molly” (0.9/3 in 18-49, 4.0 million viewers overall), “2 Broke Girls” (1.0/3 in 18-49, 4.2 million viewers overall) and “Mike & Molly” in its regular timeslot of 9:30 (1.0/3 in 18-49, 4.5 million viewers overall).

Al Jazeera America Begins Uphill Struggle for U.S. Toehold

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

A serious-minded news channel, with a name — Al Jazeera America — that’s almost an invitation to Islamophobia? What, were the names “Please Don’t Watch Us” or “This Will Cause a Painful Rash” taken?

Al Jazeera America made its debut Tuesday, kicking off its uphill slog in about half of cable/satellite homes with a program titled “This is Al Jazeera: Preview Hour,” as glossy and slick as any corporate video. The launch contained all the expected bells and whistles, from snazzy graphics to pre-produced packages, including a look at the awful working conditions in Bangladesh and questions related to decriminalizing pot in Washington state.

Ultimately, though, the new channel is facing major challenges on two tracks: Its stated plan to provide serious news, with a reputation for international coverage, when Americans are not known for being particularly curious about the wider world; and a profile many associate, rightly or wrongly, »

'Suits' in flashbacks: Not the can-opener story we want but the can-opener story we need

2 hours ago | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

After more than two seasons of speculation, "Suits" actually gave its fans a hint about the mysterious can opener! The flashback episode, "The Other Time," also explained a whole lot about Harvey and Donna's relationship, as well as that time Mike went down the wrong path with Trevor.

But the can opener is what matters. Of course.

You want the can opener? You can't handle the can opener!

It's time for an unpopular opinion: "Suits" should never fully explain the can opener. Sure, we want to know the great mystery behind that utensil, but we don't always want the right things.

The can opener falls into that category.

Now, in case there is someone reading this who doesn't know, Harvey and Donna have a victory ritual that involves a can opener. We don't know why. We don't know how. All we know is that the can opener is integral to the process. »

'America's Got Talent': Catapult Entertainment's Sandy Hook dedication leaves no dry eyes in the house

2 hours ago | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Time for the last week of quarterfinals on "America's Got Talent." The final 12 acts competing for the Top 20 spots in the semis. Who stood out for you?

For us, the stand outs were definitely D'Angelo & Amanda, Dave Fenley and Catapult Entertainment. Catapult is an obvious one because not only are they very talented dancers and storytellers, but they were also really tugging at the ol' heartstrings.

Fenley's "Trouble" performance was not actually our favorite one he's ever done, but he's still an interesting sound and we imagine has a solid following. And D'Angelo and Amanda are supremely talented dancers.

The only reason we're a little fearful for D'Angelo and Amanda is because D'Angelo's sister Ruby and her dancing partner Jonas may split the votes with them. Both duos are very, very good, but D'Angelo and Amanda are on another level.

As for the fourth act, we really don't know. Sprice is cool, »

'Suits' postmortem: Inside Harvey and Donna's 'Other Time'

Spoiler alert! If you haven’t watched this week’s episode of Suits, which flashed back 10 years to “the other time,” stop reading now. Creator Aaron Korsh and Sarah Rafferty (Donna) phoned EW separately to break down the episode fans have been waiting for…

What we learned: Ten years ago in the Da’s office, Harvey (Gabriel Macht) was a flirt and wanted to start a celebratory tradition with Donna that involved an act with whipped cream that a gentleman would not dare speak. (So he drew her a picture.) She informed him she doesn’t sleep with coworkers. A »

Al Jazeera America Takes Legal Action Against At&T

4 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

On the day of its debut, Al Jazeera America filed suit against At&T’s U-verse after the telco dropped the upstart news channel.

In a statement, Al Jazeera America said that it “made a decision to seek judicial intervention in its dispute with At&T. Unfortunately At&T’s decision to unilaterally delete Al Jazeera America presented us with circumstances that were untenable — an affiliate that has willfully and knowingly breached its contractual obligations.”

The dispute signals the challenges that Al Jazeera America faces as it launches, having acquired Current TV’s distribution platform earlier this year. Al Jazeera America is pitching itself as a serious competitor to other news channels, but also a contrast to the partisan bent of Fox News and MSNBC.

“Al Jazeera America’s strong hope is to resolve this matter quickly so that At&T’s customers will have access to our unbiased, fact-based »

'Pretty Little Liars': Bring down the hoe, indeed

4 hours ago | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

When we last left the "Pretty Little Liars," Emily was being people-under-the-stairs'd and her mom was maybe being framed for helping Ashley kill Det. Wilden. Get excited, it's time for one of the most bizarre episodes ever.

For the last one-third of the episode, everything happening is juxtaposed with a good ol' fashioned Rosewood hoedown, which means interspersed with all the usual craziness is line dancing, country songs and two-stepping.

In fact, there's a solid two minutes devoted to Aria and Jake boot-scoot-boogie-ing, which just underscores the fact that she's off in her own little world with her little boy problems while the grown-ups fight for their lives.

Did you notice that when Aria spouts off problems that rank on the "serious chart," she names serious problems for both Emily and Hanna, but her problem is a knitting needle that both Spencer and Emily were there for as well? Aria »

Lifetime is continuing to flesh out the cast of its upcoming adaptation of V.C. Andrews' controversial novel "Flowers in the Attic," adding "Orphan Black" star Dylan Bruce.

On Tuesday (Aug. 20), the actor revealed via Twitter that he'd been cast as Bartholomew "Bart" Winslow, the second husband of Corrine (Heather Graham), a recent widow who places her children in jeopardy at her parents' mansion after their father's death.

Bruce joins a cast that also includes Ellen Burstyn as the children's grandmother, Olivia, who locks the children in the attic because of a haunting family secret, and Kiernan Shipka and Mason Dye as the oldest boy and girl, who develop a particularly icky relationship up in that attic.

Not only will Bruce appear in the film and return as Paul in Season 2 of the BBC America thriller, the actor also recently booked a two-episode guest spot on The CW's "Arrow." »

That was followed by two brief, silent clips of the 29-year-old actor’s work as Detective Barry Frost, whom he had played since the series’ pilot.

In the immediate wake of Young’s death, Rizzoli & Isles halted production through at least Tuesday, as producers evaluated the situation and how the »

Fox Buys Ensemble Comedy Produced By Aaron Kaplan

4 hours ago | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

It’s a high-five at Fox for Fives, a single-camera comedy from writer/executive producer Shawn Wines, executive producer Aaron Kaplan and Warner Bros. TV, which has received a script commitment. The project reunites all the auspices of last season’s comedy Upstairs, which marked aspiring filmmaker Wines’ first sale. Fox brass liked the writer’s effort, based on his viral comedy short, and were interested in developing with him again. Fives is about a group of people who are excruciatingly average (5 on a scale of 10), coming together to battle daily life in the most image-conscious city in the world: Los Angeles. Kaplan has a history of keeping creative teams intact, which has worked well for him. He worked with comedy writer Dana Klein and 20th TV during the 2011-12 development season on Daddy’s Girls, which went to pilot at NBC. The following season, the same group landed a »
