RATINGS RAT RACE: NBC Wins Night With Rising ‘America’s Got Talent’, ‘Extreme Weight Loss’ Finale Even, ‘Capture’ Hits Low

Summer has come to an end and so did Season 3 of Extreme Weight Loss (1.2/4) last night. True to its name the ABC reality show saw this year’s winner drop a record-breaking amount of weight, losing half his weight. On the other hand, the 8 PM – 10 PM finale remained even with last week’s show and the 1.2/3 of last year’s 9PM to 11 PM season ender on August 19, 2012. In terms of viewers, last night season finale got the best numbers since this year’s debut on May 28 with 4.1 million tuning in. It was up 11% from the viewership of last year’s finale. Overall, this season of EWL has essentially been on par with Season 2 among adults 18-49, both of which were down from Season 1.

It was week 2 of the semifinals on America’s Got Talent (2.3/7) last night. The live one-hour show had Howard Stern in a three piece suit and tie, host Nick Cannon in an unusually understated tux and another dozen acts trying to make it through to snag that $1 million dollar prize and a headlining spot performing in Las Vegas. The most watched and highest rated show of the night, AGT bopped up 5% from last week’s Tuesday series low. NBC took the top spots in both the demo and viewership with a 1.9/6 and 7.119 million watching. Univision was No. 2 among adults 18-49 on Tuesday with a 1.6/5 with an all repeat CBS was second in viewership with 6.968 million watching.

Tuesday wasn’t the season finale of So You Think You Can Dance (1.3/4) but it was close. The live two show was the last performance show of SYTYCD’s 10th season and the remaining four strutted their stuff for Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy plus guest judges Olympic Gold medalist Gabby Douglas and the always dependably kooky Paula Abdul. Ratingswise, SYTYCD was even with last week’s show but did see a slight 2% rise in viewers to 4.1 million watching.

The CW had an original Whose Line Is It Anyway? (0.9/3) on at 8 PM and a new Capture (0.3/1) at 9 PM. The former was even with last week while the latter dropped 25% from its August 27 airing to hit a series low.

RealD Shares Hit Following Analyst Downgrade Over Fears About 3D Prospects

By DAVID LIEBERMAN, Financial Editor | Wednesday, 4 September 2013 16:33 UK

RealD’s shares are touching all-time lows, falling 4% to $7.71 in mid-day trading, after Stifel analyst Benjamin Mogil downgraded the 3D technology company to “Hold” from “Buy.” The company is at an “inflection point,” he says. It continues to build 3D screens domestically on top of the 13,100 at 2,900 locations it had at the end of June. That’s worrisome because “there are few weekends where 3D screen capacity is an issue” and “given declining 3D demand appears to us to be unnecessary.” The danger is that exhibitors will feel empowered to bargain for lower equipment rental rates when their contracts with RealD are up for renewal. Lots of its contracts with theater owners including Regal, AMC, and Cinemark will expire before the end of 2018. In addition, RealD is investing to bring 3D to home viewers. But execs have not “articulated any timelines/benchmarks for these initiatives…nor have they articulated how much money whey are willing to spend.” That’s a problem because investors “have limited visibility on where the home market technology stands from a commercial perspective.” It might make sense for RealD to go private, Mogil says. But that would be difficult. Insiders own just 15% of the shares, and privatization “would crimp investments in the home [3D initiatives], a key for management’s growth platform.”

Venice: Errol Morris On “Cheshire Cat” Donald Rumsfeld & ‘The Unknown Known’

Errol Morris’ Donald Rumsfeld portrait, The Unknown Known, debuted in Telluride over the weekend and is running in competition here in Venice. Morris, the Oscar-winning director of The Fog Of War, which looked at former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, says he decided to concentrate on Rumsfeld after the publication of the latter’s 2011 autobiography Known And Unknown: A Memoir. It was then that Morris became aware of the Bush administration Defense Secretary’s “snowflake” memos — the thousands of missives that Rumsfeld wrote during his time at the Pentagon — which became a key element in the film (see video here). His curiosity piqued, Morris wrote Rumsfeld a letter and enclosed a copy of The Fog Of War. “His lawyer told me that I was delusional. ‘This man will never under any circumstances talk to you’.” But within a week, he had an invitation to Rumsfeld’s office in Washington, Morris told reporters today. Ultimately, he conducted 33 hours of interviews with Rumsfeld over 11 days in a studio outside Boston.

Despite both having held the same post, Rumsfeld, a key architect of the Iraq War, and the late McNamara, a key architect of the Vietnam War, are “very, very, very different.” The latter is “The Flying Dutchman”, Morris said, “traveling the world searching for redemption and never finding it.” Rumsfeld, on the other hand, is more like the “Cheshire Cat, who at the very end vanishes and is left with just a smile.” Read More »

Les Moonves Says It Would Be “Dumb” For Lawmakers To Change Retransmission Rules: Video

By DAVID LIEBERMAN, Financial Editor | Wednesday, 4 September 2013 15:15 UK

The CBS chief rejects Time Warner Cable’s view that networks have too much power to win big price increases in pay TV carriage negotiations, and Washington should help level the playing field. “These deals should be made in the free market,” Les Moonves told CNBC following the 32-day blackout of his stations on TWC systems. Even so, he acknowledged that TWC probably couldn’t have held out much longer. “We sort of knew” that the cable company would come to terms before the NFL season begins.

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Cast: Valerie Harper, Leah Remini, Jack Osbourne, Bill Nye Among Competitors

From the brave to the blah, Mary Tyler Moore Show/Rhoda actress Valerie Harper and a mess of Disney alums were this morning revealed on the next round of ABC’s struggling dance competition series Dancing With The Stars. Harper was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in January and given three to six months to live but is now said to be “nearing remission,” as she and her doctor explained it to NBC’s Today recently while plugging Valerie’s Story — A Meredith Vieira Special, set to air September 19 on that network. Speaking of NBC, Sharon Osbourne’s son Jack — who was yanked from a reality competition series on that network when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis — is joining Harper on Dancing. His sister Kelly was a finalist on the show in 2009.

Many of the celeb dancers’ names had been leaked before this morning’s reveal on ABC’s morning infotainment show Good Morning America. Bill Nye the Science Guy was in none of those reports and he’s maybe the morning’s biggest surprise. Not at all surprising was Leah Remini, whose name was first leaked. Remini, maybe best known for starring in CBS’ sitcom King Of Queens has more recently been making headlines for her exit from Scientology. She appeared on this morning’s reveal via satellite, looking very subdued. Glee’s Amber Riley, no longer a regular on that Fox series, is looking for her next career move on Dancing; ditto Jersey Shore alum Snooki and The Voice social media correspondent Christina Milian. Ironically, it’s The Voice’s move to Dancing’s time slot that’s been giving it such a ratings headache the past several seasons. Read More »

AFI Fest Selects Disney’s ‘Saving Mr Banks’, Bennett Miller’s ‘Foxcatcher’ For Opening Slots

By PETE HAMMOND | Wednesday, 4 September 2013 14:00 UK
Pete Hammond

With Telluride over, Venice wrapping up and Toronto about to begin, it’s never too early for another film festival to make some noise. So here comes the AFI Fest announcing their opening-night film November 7th will be a Disney awards-season biggie: the North American premiere of Saving Mr Banks starring Emma Thompson as Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers and Tom Hanks in a supporting role as Walt Disney. It is said to be warm and funny and a potential Oscar contender, not only for Thompson and Hanks  but also Best Picture. It is also a no-brainer opener for the AFI. It has a movie theme (Disney tries to convince the stubborn author to sell him rights to make Mary Poppins) and also is partially set at the Chinese theatre, where AFI Fest is headquartered. What could be more perfect? Hate to say I TOLDJA! — but I did. AFI announced they will also be showing 1964′s Mary Poppins itself in honor of its 50th anniversary. It’s actually only 49 years but hey, who’s counting? In a move that indicates filmmakers LOVE to have that opening-night slot , AFI also announced Sony Pictures Classics’ new Bennett Miller drama Foxcatcher will be the cleverly titled “Opening Weekend” Gala on November 8, a World Premiere. SPC’s co-president Michael Barker is very high on this one and told me over the weekend in Telluride that the company expects it to be one of their top awards contenders including for star Steve Carell’s transformative performance in which he is virtually unrecognizable. Barker indicated the film will start early press screenings in mid-October. Mark Ruffalo and Channing Tatum co-star. That Best Actor race promises to be more crowded than ever. The Coen brothers’ Cannes hit, Inside Llewyn Davis which just played Telluride and will also hit the New York Film Festival, was previously announced as the Closing Night film on November 14. Here’s this morning’s full release: Read More »

UPDATE: Jon Stewart Returns To ‘The Daily Show’ A Darker Faux Newsman: Video

By LISA DE MORAES, TV Columnist | Wednesday, 4 September 2013 12:37 UK

UPDATED WITH VIDEO: “I’ve missed you so much — you don’t know what it’s like out there in the real world. Nobody applauds every stupid fucking thing you do!” Jon Stewart said in his return to The Daily Show last night. Viewers, meanwhile, may still be missing Stewart. The comic-turned-fake news show faux-anchor returned from Jordan, where he spent a good chunk of the summer directing his first feature film, showing telltale signs of a comic who has been through a life-changing experience and feels he should be doing something more serious.

Related: John Oliver Kept ‘Daily Show’ Anchor Chair Hot: Video

After an opening taped bit in which his summer substitute John Oliver discovered how changed Stewart is, and tried in vain to get back the old Jon — instead turning him into Moses, Freddie Mercury, Miley Cyrus at the VMAs, and Hitler — Stephen Colbert is brought in and, for script purposes, successfully exorcised Stewart, so The Daily Show could start. Stewart took his anchor chair and brought out Oliver to receive praise. Not that Oliver needs it. He got great reviews filling in for Stewart this summer, which must have been a comfort to Viacom Entertainment Group President Doug Herzog tonight, knowing there can be life after Stewart for The Daily Show. Not that Herzog’s making plans to replace Stewart — but it’s got to be nice to know The Daily Show won’t fall off a cliff should this new Stewart just back from Jordon decide it’s time to move on.

Global Showbiz Briefs: Adopt Acquires ‘Priest’s Children’; Bollywood Curtails Foreign Shoots; Content Media; More

By NANCY TARTAGLIONE, International Editor | Wednesday, 4 September 2013 06:00 UK

Adopt Acquires Hit Croatian Comedy
Adopt Films has taken all U.S. rights to Croatian comedy The Priest’s Children. The Vinko Brešan-directed movie premiered at Karlovy Vary and has become the 3rd highest-grossing Croatian film in the country since it achieved independence in the 1990s. A pastiche about the slightly unethical fashion in which an idealistic young priest addresses the declining birth rate among his flock on a magically beautiful Crotian island is reminiscent of 1983’s Scotland-set Local Hero. It stars Krešimir Mikić, Zdenko Botic, Nikša Butijer, Drazen Kuhn and Marija Škaričič. Producer is Ivan Maloča for Interfilm Produkcija and Zillion Film. It was written (and scored) by Mate Matišić, based on his play. Adopt acquired the film from Paris-based Wide Management. Read More »
