Opening This Week - August 30

Certificate PG   -   Documentary | Music

Metascore: 50/100 (6 reviews)
A look at Niall, Zayn, Liam, Louis, and Harry's meteoric rise to fame, from their humble hometown beginnings and competing on the X-Factor, to conquering the world and performing at London's famed O2 Arena.

The Buzz: Justin Bieber's pop-star days are probably numbered now that the attention once solely reserved for him has been refocused on this British boy band that was assembled in 2010 by Simon Cowell as he was prepping a new season of "X Factor". But Biebs will always have the superlative documentary in my mind because I know some sarcastic dudes who were reduced to tears by Never Say Never. Meanwhile, people who exist in indie-film circles, are a-gog due to the fact that Morgan Spurlock is directing.

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Crime

Former race-car driver Brent Magna is pitted against the clock when his wife is kidnapped by a mysterious villain. He commanders a young woman's car and takes her on on a high-speed race against time.

The Buzz: This premise makes me wonder if Warner Bros. is trying to find the balance between a Jason Statham movie and Ryan Gosling's arty and beloved Drive. Indie-horror maverick Courtney Solomon, who runs After Dark Films, is at the helm. And look at young Selena Gomez go; you have to admire her as she follows a path to lead her out of tweendom and into a hopefully prolonged career.

Certificate R   -   Crime | Drama | Mystery | Thriller

Metascore: 43/100 (7 reviews)
A high-profile terrorism case unexpectedly binds together two ex-lovers on the defense team - testing the limits of their loyalties and placing their lives in jeopardy.
Director:

The Buzz: Pretty much anyone who has been aware of this project's existence has cited the presence of Eastern Promises screenwriter Steve Knight as the main reason to see the film. We're excited for his return to the thriller genre as well as the imaginable chemistry between Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall, two fine actors with unfortunately inconsistent filmographies. And if you have yet to see director John Crowley's Boy A, I suggest seeking it out.

Certificate R   -   Crime | Drama | Mystery | Thriller

Metascore: 55/100 (10 reviews)
The rivalry between the manipulative boss of an advertising agency and her talented protégée escalates from stealing credit to public humiliation to murder.
Director:

The Buzz: No surprise the reviews are divided for Brian de Palma's remake of Alain Corneau's final film, Crime d'amour. The icy story is certainly not feminist, which is hard to reconcile as you watch Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace try to eat one another alive. So toggle off your ethics and enjoy, I guess.

Certificate PG-13 Comedy | Drama

A man who has made a new life for himself and the daughter left on his doorstep 6 years ago finds his family threatened when the birth mother resurfaces.
Director:

The Buzz: Eugenio Derbez is no stranger to TV and movie audiences, and here he makes his big-screen directorial debut with a dramedy that has probably already been optioned for an English-language remake.

Certificate R   -   Drama | Romance

Metascore: 30/100 (4 reviews)
A former valedictorian quits her reporter job in New York and returns to the place she last felt happy: her childhood home in Connecticut. She gets work as a lifeguard and starts a dangerous relationship with a troubled teenager.
Director:

The Buzz: Kristen Bell and her likeable co-stars try their best to improve upon the material they were handed in Liz Garcia's first film, which has been compared, note for note, to the woeful Hello I Must Be Going.

  -   Action | Comedy | Drama

Metascore: 66/100 (5 reviews)
Summer war games between neighborhood kids turn deadly serious when jealousy and betrayal enter the mix.
