In 2010 there were an estimated 22.9 million people living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa.1 This has increased since 2009, when an estimated 22.5 million people were living with HIV, including 2.3 million children.2
The increase in people living with HIV could be partly due to a decrease in AIDS-related deaths in the region. There were 1.2 million deaths due to AIDS in 2010 compared to 1.3 million in 2009.3 4 Almost 90% of the 16.6 million children orphaned by AIDS live in sub-Saharan Africa.5
The latest figures for each sub-Saharan African country showing the number of people living with HIV, the number of deaths from AIDS, and the number of living orphans were published in 2010 and refer to 2009. They are shown below.6

These estimates include all people with HIV infection, including those who have not developed symptoms of AIDS.
Adults in this page are defined as men and women aged over 15, unless specified otherwise.
Children are defined as people under the age of 15, whilst orphans are children aged under 18 who have lost one or both parents to AIDS.
