The man who brought the tourism horror of Hostel to the big screen is bringing a whole new type of fright to Sin City. Eli Roth’s Goretorium haunted house is scheduled to open on September 27 in Las Vegas, right in time for Halloween. “Horror fans know that with my name on it,” Roth told Deadline, “it won’t be for little kids. They know it will be a very scary experience.” Aiming to tap into the $7 billion a year Halloween industry, the 24/7 all year round mult-leveled Goretorium, situated at the corner of Strip and Harmon in Vegas, aspires to become “the world mecca for horror fans,” says Roth. Last year, Roth’s Hostel maze was the one of the most highly attended attractions at Universal Horror Nights. Roth, who’s heading off to Pennsylvania next week to start shooting his Netflix mystery series Hemlock Grove, says he’s already had pre-opening offers to franchise the Goretorium in London, Tokyo and New York, as well as elsewhere in America.
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.
What was that hostel maze about? Anyone go?
Sounds great. I’d love to check it out.
What is this “perception” with Eli Roth as a horror guy? He’s only directed three films, none of which made more than $50M domestically. Hostel ($47M) was good, but Cabin Fever ($21M) was tonally all over the place and Hostel 2 ($17M) completely tanked. The last movie he directed was five years ago, and he will do anything but direct a movie because he’s built a brand and his “talents” on display in a movie would expose him as a complete phony. The guy’s the Kim Kardashian of horror.
his Hostel movies are made for sadists
Has Eli Roth become the Ryan Seacrest of of horror?
nah, seacrest actually does something. Roth’s more like the Dane Cook of horror
The Hostel maze was amazing! Surprisingly, I met Eli Roth in line for his maze!
There’s already a popular Halloween scare fest on the Vegas strip, Fright Dome at Circus Circus. What’s most interesting is according to the article, Eli wants to make this a year round attraction. Will it do well enough during the other months to pay the overhead?
It is already widely known that horror films are not exactly going to rank in the big bucks like other Hollywood blockbusters. Judging Eli Roth’s horror credibility on the amount of money his films make is a little absurd. First take a look at everything he has acted, produced and written
This sounds great! I’m sure it will be a very popular attraction. The Fright Dome is only during Halloween time and its made for families. This at least sounds like it will be for the older audiences and much scarier than the Fright Dome. I don’t think Eli will disappoint.
Wait, i heard Eli is coming back to HHN – Hollywood This Year. T+Goretorium would be perfect for HHN.
Eli isn’t so heavily involved with horror because of the movies he’s directed but because of his understand of the genre and involvement with it. He’s done several documentaries, and discusses the history of horror cinema quite frequently. The man may not be an incredible director, but he can only produce movies as good as the scripts given to him.
It was just like the movie… wasn’t that great. The Alice Cooper maze and House of 1000 Corpses were way better.
There are some cities in the US that have successful year round mazes. Niagara Falls on the Canadian side has a whole bunch of them, any time of year on the weekends the attractions are quite popular.
Sad sad sad. A celebration of mutilation is not showbiz nor is it creative.
It feeds the enjoyment of cruelty and only degrades American entertainment efforts.
It only appeals to people who like watching other people get hurt.
A pantomime of degradation.
it’s entertainment for those who are fans of being scared. You must be what you described, you did it so well.
Everyone here is a crtic but I will bet MONEY the next time you visit Vegas you will be first in line to check out his haunt experience. Then right after think to yourself how cool the experience was and go strait home and blog differently with your negative attitudes. You negative bloggers are a sad bunch. Cant wait to check out the haunt, Hostel was great! It didnt do as well in the box offices because it didnt have some lame A list actor in it that doesnt know anything about horror. Both Hostels created such a buzz that everyone knows Elis name now, and btw hes a great actor, watch inglorious bastards.
I know for fact that there is serious talent working on this project. The result should be a total blast.
While a couple people here may know Roth, to the general public he is a total unknown. Also as pointed out his couple of movies were not huge movie makers, only attended by horror enthusiasts. So now you put his name on a year round attraction on the Strip and think it is going to create immediate name recognition???
Let’s see…think of the intended audience? Why do people come to Vegas? Gambling…drinking…stage shows…gambling…drinking….visit a haunted house…not likely. There is a high percentage of visitors that are 4 days or less. Usually connected to a convention or a holiday. With all Vegas has to offer and the limited time frame how many people will seriously take time out to see a haunted house by who?? Eli Roth?? You might as well call it “Bob’s Big Boo House”
The point is people come to Vegas for a reason, and I don’t think seeing an Eli Roth haunted house is a top priority!!You can point to Madame Tussaud’s, Titanic and Bodies and say these attractions are still operating? Yes but they all have a huge awareness with universal appeal. Also look at all the attractions that didn’t make it and they have name recognition, Ripley’s, Guinness World Book, Star Trek…to name a few. We have major nightclubs opening practically even month…and clubs closing every month. Each one spending millions. What is Roth’s budget?
If in fact this does open, my suggestion would be see it in the first few months. Cause I’d give it 8-1 odds it won’t last a year!! It’s Vegas Baby!!
your opinion is like an asshole, everyone has one and they all stink!
I’ll bet no one here saw Hostel III (2011)a surprisingly terrific threequel that remarkably matched the humorous and menacing tone of its predecessors.
Fright Dome is 5 Haunted Houses in a theme park ranked in the top 5 in the Nation. I have been there for the last three years. Fright Dome includes “popular horror movies” like Saw or Halloween. Eli’s place in on the 3rd floor of a Walgreens building. So when people mention comparing the two there is no comparison at all. Just about every year round attraction has failed, so he is gonna need a ton more than Hostel to keep this going. I hate to see anything fail in town, but he is gonna need a miracle.
