"Veronica Mars," the quirky cult hit about a sassy teen sleuth, left fans with plenty of unanswered questions when it abruptly went off the air in 2007. But an enormously successful Kickstarter campaign, which raised $5.7 million for a follow up film, gave showrunner Rob Thomas the perfect opportunity to tie up the series' loose ends and reunite audiences with Neptune's zany but beloved cast of characters.
"Veronica Mars'" die hard fans, affectionately called "Marshmallows," finally got a sneak peak of the film at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.
"Fans are cool, but 'Veronica Mars' fans are awesome," Kristen Bell explains in the introductory lead up to the teaser trailer, which also features behind-the-scenes footage and interviews from Thomas and the rest of the cast.
Thomas, Bell, and other original cast members -- including Jason Dohring, Enrico Colantoni, Francis Capra, and Tina Marjorino -- unveiled the film in a panel at the annual festival. Thomas told passionate audience members that the film was thematically inspired by "Godfather III."
"Veronica Mars" hits theaters in 2014.
