Longtime UPI White House reporter Helen Thomas dead at 92
President Ronald Reagan -- a notorious lover of sweet treats -- declared the third Sunday in July National Ice Cream Day back in 1984.
"Ice cream is a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over ninety percent of the people in the United States," the presidential proclamation read. "It enjoys a reputation as the perfect dessert and snack food."
Though ice cream dates back to the 16th century, according to the International Dairy Foods Association, there's no record of its presence in America until 1744. A confectioner bought the first advertisement for ice cream in 1777, and by the summer of 1790, George Washington himself had bought $200 worth of the stuff.
In honor of Reagan's call for Americans to "observe these events with appropriate ceremonies and activities," patriots around the country -- including the president -- dug into the classic summertime snack this weekend.
