CUTTACK: Rath Yatra was celebrated with pulling of chariots in different parts of the state on Wednesday but people of Nijigada at Tigiria in Cuttack district will do so on Thursday.

According to legend, King Jagannath Kshetriya Birabara Champati Singh Mohapatra was a devotee of Jagannath and was had the honour of performing an important ritual (bada parichha seva) on Rath Yatra in Puri. He used to travel to Puri to take part in the festival. On returning the next day, he conducted the festival in his kingdom, explained managing trustee of Prasannamani temple Sankarshan Mohanty.

"Since then the tradition is being religiously followed by his successors," said Manoranjan Mohanty, a local historian. The district administration has also made elaborate arrangements for smooth conduct of the festival. "All rituals like pahandi and chhera pahanra were conducted on Wednesday. The chariots would roll on Thursday," said tehsildar of Tigiria Binod Jena.
