Programs for Educational Institutions

Academic Volume Licensing programs put Microsoft software in the hands of educators and students so they can interact, collaborate, and learn.

The Academic Volume Licensing program that is best for you depends on the size and type of your institution and how you want to acquire Microsoft licenses. There are two types of programs: Subscription Licensing Programs and Perpetual Licensing Programs.

Subscription Licensing Programs

Subscription licensing gives you rights to use the products you license-plus covered upgrades and downgrades-over the license period.

Microsoft has two subscription licensing offerings for education customers, the Enrollment for Education Solutions and the School Enrollment. Both offer a subset of products including specific application, system, and Client Access License (CAL) products, designated by Microsoft as "desktop platform products," which are licensed on an organization-wide basis.

To get started with your subscription, you place an order for desktop platform products in a quantity that is equal to your organization-wide count (counted in either the number of PC/ devices or Full-time Equivalent (FTE) personnel depending on the subscription offering your organization choses). For products licensed organization wide, even if the number of devices or users grows, you remain fully licensed throughout the designated term, and you only need to report an increase in the number of your PC / devices or Full-time Equivalent (FTE) employees on your annual order.

All products licensed through either subscription offering include Microsoft Software Assurance, a comprehensive maintenance offering that helps you maximize your software investment.

  • The Enrollment for Education Solutions (EES) is available to both primary/secondary and higher education institutions and offers the simplicity of counting people instead of PCs/devices and the flexibility to add additional products in any quantity as needed.

  • The School Enrollment is for primary/secondary schools and preschools and offers the simplicity of licensing all products organization-wide where you can order any product for a quantity that matches the annual count of your organization's PCs/devices.

Perpetual Licensing Programs

In perpetual licensing programs, you purchase the software licenses-giving your organization rights to the software after the licensing term ends.

Program Change:
Effective April 1, 2012, the Student Option under Select License and Select Plus will be retired. The Student Option under EES and OVS-ES will not change. No new Student Select 6 enrollments or Student Select Plus Affiliate Registration Forms (ARFs) will be accepted. Enrollments and ARFs current as of March 31, 2012, can stay active for the remainder of the term. However, students cannot order Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office for the Mac, Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade, or Expressions Studio through a Select Student enrollment or Select Plus ARF as of April 1, 2012. Other products under Student Select and Student Select Plus will be available through the remainder of the term of the enrollment or ARF and can be ordered or downloaded.

Microsoft will continue to work to improve our offerings to students and institutions to provide greater benefits for our institutional customers, administrators, educators and learners. Please contact your software reseller for additional purchasing options for students.

Programs for Charitable Organizations

Eligible nonprofit organizations can acquire multiple software licenses—rather than multiple software packages—at reduced prices through Volume Licensing. Your organization needs to purchase only one complete software package and enough licenses to cover the remaining number of computers.

Open License for Charities
Easy to understand and administer, Open License for Charities is flexible enough to meet the needs of a broad range of organizations. After an initial order of five or more licenses, you can reorder as few as one license, so you order only what you need. Choose from a wide selection of licensed products and acquire them from any approved Volume Licensing reseller.

You receive license confirmation information electronically and can quickly and easily view your license purchase history, so there's never any question about which licenses you own. Your organization gets even more value, more manageability, and more assistance with optional Software Assurance.

Software Assurance
More than an upgrade, Software Assurance can help your organization get the most value from up-to-date technology by providing a powerful combination of productivity benefits, support, tools, and training. Software Assurance offerings available under Open License for Charities are the same benefits as those available under commercial Open License agreements.
