VISITORS to Echuca in Victoria can now hire vintage-style bikes to explore the area for free.

The Port Picnic Bikes can be collected from several local businesses, including St. Anne's Cellar Store, Echuca Farmhouse Cheese and the Echuca Moama Visitor Centre.

Riders can ride between local producers to collect wine and cheese with the help of a free map and stop for a picnic on the banks of the Murray River.

The free tourist bike scheme aims to link local businesses and promote cycling as a sustainable and healthy mode of transport in the area.

Echuca is around 188km from Melbourne on the banks of the Murray River and Campaspe River.

Its border town Moama is on the northern side of the Murray river in NSW.
