Since 1946 UNICEF has been the world’s leader for children, working in 158 countries to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence.

UNICEF is a Cosponsor of UNAIDS and under the UNAIDS division of labour it is lead agency on care and support of people living with HIV, children and orphans, and procurement. It is co-lead on preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission.

HIV is one of the core priorities within its Medium-Term Strategic Plan 2006–2013. It focuses its support to countries on “Four P” priority areas:

  • Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV;
  • Paediatric HIV care and treatment;
  • Protection, care and support for children affected by HIV and AIDS; and
  • HIV prevention among adolescents and young people.

UNICEF also provides support to healthcare delivery systems in resource-constrained areas and the management of HIV supplies needed by children and their parents.
