World’s food standard body praised as safety net for consumers
2 July 2013 -- As Codex Alimentarius, the world’s top food standard body for consumer protection and fair practices in international food trade, celebrated its 50th anniversary, the FAO and WHO Directors-General and national governments united in their praise for its benefits. -
WHO issues new HIV recommendations calling for earlier treatment
30 June 2013 -- New HIV treatment guidelines by WHO recommend offering antiretroviral therapy (ART) earlier. Recent evidence indicates that earlier ART will help people with HIV to live longer, healthier lives, and substantially reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to others. The move could avert an additional 3 million deaths and prevent 3.5 million more new HIV infections between now and 2025. -
WHO report highlights violence against women as a ‘global health problem of epidemic proportions’
20 June 2013 -- Physical or sexual violence is a public health problem that affects more than one third of all women globally, according to a new report released by WHO in partnership with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the South African Medical Research Council.
