Following yesterday’s drama with the start of AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike Race 1 at Barber Motorsports Park, the excitement of Sunday’s Race 2 played out completely on the track as three-time defending SuperBike Champ Josh Hayes won his fourth consecutive race of the season. Josh has now moved into second place in the Championship points standings, passing his Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha teammate Josh Herrin. On the strength of his perfect weekend at Barber--in which he earned points for the pole, both race wins, and for leading the most laps in both races, Josh Hayes is now just 10 points out of the lead.
Hayes, who rides the #1 Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha YZF-R1, had a much better start to today’s race, and he was in the lead from lap one, with Herrin in hot pursuit. A slight bobble on lap six enabled Herrin to get past the Champ, and Herrin led the race for two laps before Hayes was able to pass Herrin again for the lead. Hayes didn’t relinquish the lead for the remainder of the race, despite a significant challenge from second-place finisher Roger Hayden.
“It was a really hard race,” Josh Hayes said. “I was riding as fast as I could, and I was hitting my marks. It’s a big testament to my Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha team that I was able to get the win. It was a fun race for me, with my teammate and then with Rog both challenging me like they did. We got all the points we could out of this weekend, and that’s important for the Championship. The time that I’ve spent with my R1, the training I’ve done, and my experienced crew all helped me a lot to make up so much ground, so quickly.”
Josh Herrin commented, “I got out in front, and it felt good to lead a couple of laps. I’m happy that we improved quite a bit throughout the weekend, and I was turning my fastest laps of the whole weekend during the race. I went pretty quick in this morning’s warmup, so I felt like we had found something to work with. I still need to get better at keeping my pace as the race winds down, though…but it’s good to be back on the podium again.”
The Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha team will be back in action on July 12-14 for Round 4 of the AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Championship at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, OH.
