The Buzz: It's tough to be a superhero movie the summer after The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises, especially when you're a reboot of a franchise that Bryan Singer couldn't quite relaunch. Funny how in movie terms seven years can feel either like an eternity or just moments ago. With Warner Bros. and DC Comics execs hovering about and Christopher Nolan in studio-mandated mentor mode, it's safe to assume that director Zack Snyder has been on a tight leash for the duration of development and production; since he's working with his best cast to date, we're rooting for a serious-minded superhero flick with some of Snyder's fanboy candy - his trademark visual flourishes. There are a number of stalled comic-book properties that are being re-imagined, from The Fantastic Four to Daredevil. At worst, this one could be the best. I mean, Russell Crowe and Michael Shannon in the same movie? I'll take that bet.

While attending a party at James Franco's house, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel and many other celebrities are faced with the apocalypse.

The Buzz: Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel look to out-meta pal James Franco with a studio-backed expansion of their short, which was shot right after filming on Knocked Up wrapped. Though Judd Apatow has nothing to do with the production directly, he must be one proud papa; look at what his players have achieved - Ken Miller from "Freaks and Geeks" is now a film director.

Inspired by actual events, a group of fame-obsessed teenagers use the internet to track celebrities' whereabouts in order to rob their homes.

The Buzz: Since Spring Breakers created a neon-bikini pop-culture mini-frenzy, we're interested to see if Sofia Coppola's typically wispy filmmaking approach can add more to the discussion about the adventures and motivations of listless, infamy-seeking youth.

A look at the relationship between Mike and Sulley during their days at Monsters University -- when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.
Director:

The Buzz: Initially, we were a bit disheartened to hear that Pixar was using its 2013 slot for a Monsters, Inc. prequel: we already know that Mike and Sulley wind up being best friends, so the story of how they met could feel redundant. We got a look at some Monsters University concept art at Disney's D23 event last summer, though, and now we're definitely interested to see how Pixar goes about "monsterizing" the college experience. Here's hoping that in the pantheon of Pixar sequels/prequels, this is more Toy Story 3 and less Cars 2.

Certificate PG-13 Action | Drama | Horror | Sci-Fi | Thriller

United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself.
Director:

The Buzz: Marc Foster always seemed like a curious pick to helm an action-heavy adaptation of the novel by Max Brooks, and details on the out-of-focus production emerged over the summer of 2012 as to its myriad problems, from indecision as to what the zombies should look like to major crew members asking to be let go from the production. Never mind the skyrocketing budget. What first appeared to be the best franchise starter since Rise of the Planet of the Apes has a target on its back; I'm sensing this is the Men in Black 3 of Summer 2013 - meaning it will under-perform in the U.S. and make its money elsewhere.

Certificate R   -   Action | Comedy | Crime

Uptight FBI special agent Sarah Ashburn is paired with testy Boston cop Shannon Mullins in order to take down a ruthless drug lord. The hitch: neither woman has ever had a partner -- or a friend for that matter.

The Buzz: Gracie Hart fans, listen up: Right before Sandra Bullock unveils her wildly anticipated science-fiction turn in Gravity, she teams up with Melissa McCarthy to keep the female-powered comedy renaissance going. The movies also serves as Paul Feig's follow-up to Bridesmaids, as the director/producer/occasional writer is making industry strides on a Judd Apatow level.

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Drama | Thriller

While on a tour of the White House with his young daughter, a Capitol policeman springs into action to save his child and protect the president from a heavily armed group of paramilitary invaders.
Director:

The Buzz: Given the subject matter, it's cool and creepy that President Jamie Foxx and First Lady Garcelle Beauvais reflect the current administration, and the advantage this project has over its sound-alike predecessor, Olympus Has Fallen, is the every-gender appeal of its star, Channing Tatum. If anything, 2013 might be remembered as the year that both Roland Emmerich and his equally-VFX-addicted contemporary, Michael Bay, offered up scaled-down project.

Certificate R   -   Comedy

Metascore: 61/100 (6 reviews)
When it appears as though the end is in sight, the pilots, flight crew, and passengers of a plane heading to Mexico City look to forget the anguish of the moment and face the greatest danger, which we carry within ourselves.
Director:

The Buzz: Pedro Almodovar himself let it be known that he is revisiting the tone of his early comedies with his latest film, which features cameos from Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz, and plenty of fey delights, apparently. We've loved the dark detour he's taken since Volver and look forward to a summery change of tone. It's also worth noting that in a creative climate where money is hard to come by, Excited! was financed entirely by worldwide pre-sales.

Certificate R   -   Drama | Fantasy | Thriller

Metascore: 62/100 (7 reviews)
Residents of a coastal town learn, with deathly consequences, the secret shared by the two mysterious women who have sought shelter at a local resort.

The Buzz: Few directors handle myth like Neil Jordan. Look up detailed reviews of his questionable films -- In Dreams, Ondine, The Brave One are my nominees -- and you'll sense the architecture of his entire, curious filmography. Fans have breathlessly awaited his return to the world of vampires, hoping he will breathe new eternal life into the genre, which has been victimized by many unworthy entries over the last few years. One dividing factor here could be the lack of gore, because this is a mood piece from beginning to end.

Certificate R   -   Action | Thriller

Homeless and on the run from a military court martial, a damaged ex-special forces soldier navigating London's criminal underworld seizes an opportunity to assume another man's identity -- transforming into an avenging angel in the process.

The Buzz: Gritty screenwriter Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Dirty Pretty Things) makes his directorial debut with a thriller that will hopefully help us distinguish Jason Statham's latest movie from everything that has preceded it.
