The process for U.S Presidential Elections is defined by the United States Constitution and United States Code. - Constitution of the United States
- Article 2 Section 1 - establishes the office of President and Vice President, length of term, process for election, and more.
- Amendment XII - redefines the process for electing the President. Supercedes part of Article 2 Section 1.
- Amendment XIV - Section 3 prohibits members of government at various levels from becoming President if they engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the Constitution that they had sworn an oath to.
- Amendment XV - prohibits denial of the the right to vote on the basis of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
- Amendment XIX - prohibits denial of the right to vote on the basis of gender. This amendment gave women the right to vote.
- Amendment XX - sets a new start date for the presidential term and clairfies the process in case of the death of the President-elect before taking office.
- Amendment XXII - sets term limits of the office of the presidency.
- Amendment XXIII - grants the District of Columbia the right to three electors in the presidential election.
- Amendment XXIV - prohibits denial of the right to vote on the basis of failure to pay a poll tax.
- Amendment XXV - further clarification on the presidential line-of-succession and establishes rules if the President is unable to perform his duties while in office.
- Amendment XXVI - prohibits denial of the right to vote on the basis of age (18 years or older). This amendment changed the voting age from 21 to 18.
