World Bank mission, Sri Lanka

NICE International Director Kalipso Chalkidou took part in a World Bank mission organised by the Results Based Financing team, to Colombo, Sri Lanka from 9 - 15 May 2012. The mission had multiple components including:

1. Delivering half-day's training on the Quality and Outcomes Framework and the role of NICE especially regarding the selection of clinical indicators as part of an 5-day RBF workshop attended by more than 40 participants, administrators, clinicians, accountants and planning officials from across the country

2. Having a series or high level meetings with senior healthcare professionals including the Presidents of Medical Colleges, senior policy makers, including the Additional Secretary for Medical Services Administration, the lead for Sri Lanka's innovative Chronic Diseases programme and the Secretary for Health, as well as the head of the State Pharmaceutical Corporation and the Head of the Regulatory Division for pharmaceutical products and cosmetics

3. Taking part in field trips visiting a base hospital as well as district and community level facilities in the Southern provinces, including one of the 300 newly established health lifestyle centres aimed at identifying and tackling the grown challenge of chronic disease, with an emphasis on prevention and health promotion.

The discussions proved extremely positive and there was enthusiasm on all three sides (the Sri Lankan authorities, the World Bank and NICE) to strengthen our collaboration, including possible visits to NICE and NHS facilities, and further work on health technology assessment, quality standards and linkages with the UK's regulator MHRA.
