Research and Development

The United Kingdom has an outstanding record of scientific innovation through Research and Development (R&D).

NICE is at the forefront of international efforts to improve the management of the health of the population. NICE operates in an extremely challenging environment and the science continues to evolve rapidly. The important role of R&D in ensuring NICE is proactive and responsive is recognised in NICE's Corporate Strategy and Business Plan.

All teams at NICE participate in R&D activities to ensure that NICE's processes, methods and policies remain up to date and fit for purpose.

NICE also produces recommendations for further clinical and public health research to address uncertainties that have been identified during guidance production. This is to ensure that the necessary research is undertaken to inform future guidance reviews.

NICE works with the research community for example, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) to ensure the necessary research is undertaken.

Research and Development (R&D) at NICE is a corporate activity that cuts across departmental boundaries and often takes the form of projects which involve individuals and organisations outside NICE. The NICE R&D team facilitates the prioritisation of research with external partners and monitors uptake of proposed topics.
