Opening This Week - April 26

Certificate R   -   Action | Comedy | Crime | Drama | Thriller

A trio of bodybuilders in Florida get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong.

The Buzz: Our main question would be for Michael Bay, and it would be: when was the last time you directed from an actual-real screenplay? This absurdist premise feels as though it could have sprung out from the Coen Bros. fully formed, but in fact it's a true story adapted by the writing team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who have graduated from the crusty Narnia franchise and retooled themselves as Marvel specialists.

Certificate R   -   Comedy

A long-divorced couple fakes being married as their family unites for a wedding.

The Buzz: The Bucket List put writer Justin Zackham on the Hollywood map, and his next to-do is also centered on older adults; this time, Diane Keaton and Robert De Niro, last seen together in Marvin's Room, play the divorced parents who fake a certain level of happiness as their adopted son's wedding approaches. At first consideration, I thought this was some sort of romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl - a harder sell.

Two teenage boys encounter a fugitive and form a pact to help him evade the bounty hunters on his trail and to reunite him with his true love.

The Buzz: Since Matthew McConaughey suddenly is every critic's favor actor, look for his starring role to help make the new film from Jeff Nichols (whose last work, Take Shelter, really caught me on a second viewing) his highest-profile outing yet. We're thoroughly anticipating the boy-adventure and its similarities to David Gordon Green's early work. Hopefully Reese Witherspoon - would certainly had a newsworthy weekend, recently - will emerge with some much-needed cool factor, too.

Metascore: 56/100 (4 reviews)
The story of legendary explorer Thor Heyerdal's epic 4,300 miles crossing of the Pacific on a balsa wood raft in 1947, in an effort prove it was possible for South Americans to settle in Polynesia in pre-Columbian times.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: The movie based on the adventures of Norwegian ethnographer and explorer Thor Heyerdal faced the seemingly impossible task of facing Amour in the Best Foreign Language Oscar race. Now off the awards circuit, this well-received new project can stand on its own merits. Co-directors Joachim Rönning and Espen Sandberg are set to make a Hollywood project next with a script currently titled Spectral.

Metascore: 30/100 (4 reviews)
A story of a man who fakes his own death and assumes a new identity in order to escape his life, who then moves in with a woman who is also trying to leave her past behind.
Director:

The Buzz: Love the idea of Colin Firth and Emily Blunt together in a comedy with some dramatic, identity-shedding elements? Us too. Also compelling is the fact that the company releasing Arthur has partnered with BitTorrent -- a website formerly synonymous with piracy that is now going legit -- to promote the movie.

Certificate R   -   Drama | Thriller

Metascore: 59/100 (7 reviews)
A farming family's business is threatened by an unexpected crisis, further testing the relationship between a father and his rebellious son.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Part of me get this project in theory: a message movie designed to further advance the second stage of Zac Efron's acting career. The other part of me thinks this looks like Footloose without the fun and the best-selling soundtrack.

Certificate R   -   Thriller

A young Pakistani man is chasing corporate success on Wall Street. He finds himself embroiled in a conflict between his American Dream, a hostage crisis, and the enduring call of his family's homeland.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: As with The Namesake, here Mira Nair is concerned with the immigrant experience in the United States, though her source material - Mohsin Hamid's intimate novel - concerns a young, single man's life pre- and post-9/11. Riz Ahmed's lead performance has earned praise; reviews of Nair's direction, on the other hand, are middling - with most critics calling into question the decision to turn a character study into a thriller.
