Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Situation in Côte d'Ivoire

December 25, 1999

  1. The Government of Japan is gravely concerned that disorders created by part of the military in the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire have put the country in turmoil. Such a situation in Côte d'Ivoire, a stable leading power in West Africa, is regrettable as Japan is keenly interested in progress of democratization in the whole of Africa. The Government of Japan strongly hopes that public order and the democratic process will be restored in the country as soon as possible.

  2. There are about 200 Japanese residents including those related to Japan's Official Development Aid (ODA) in Côte d'Ivoire. The Government of Japan strongly urges the parties concerned to ensure the security of all these Japanese nationals.
