Grant Aid to Palestinian Authority for Project for Improvement of Water Distribution Facilities in the Northern Districts of the West Bank (Phase I)

December 11, 1999

The Government of Japan has decided to extend a grant aid of up to 1,717 million yen (approximately 14 million U.S. dollars) to the Palestinian Interim Self-Government Authority for its Project for Improvement of Water Distribution Facilities in the Northern Districts of the West Bank (Phase I).

With this aid, the Palestinian Authority will construct water distribution facilities and purchase materials necessary to facilitate house connection to these facilities. This project is expected to raise the living standard and sanitation by improving the water supply to about 54,000 residents in 13 municipalities in the Northern Districts of the West Bank. The project is also expected to contribute to improving the Palestinian economy by offering job opportunities to the residents.

Notes to this effect were exchanged between the two governments on December 11 (Sat) in Gaza.

With this new aid, Japan's assistance to the Palestinians since 1993 amounts to about 491 million U.S. dollars. The Government of Japan intends to continue to cooperate actively for the support of the Middle East peace process.
