Emergency Aid to Pakistan for the Refugees from Afghanistan

October 5, 2001

  1. The Government of Japan decided on October 5 (Fri) to extend an emergency grant aid of 7.5 million dollars (802 million yen) to the Islamic Republic of the Pakistan in order to assist Pakistan's efforts to deal with Afghan refugees.

  2. This emergency grant aid will be extended as part of Japan's "Emergency economic assistance to Pakistan," which is one item of the concrete measures included in "Japan's Measures in Response to the Terrorist Attacks in the United States " announced on September 19.

  3. In Pakistan, a great number of Afghan refugees have been sojourning, and due to the terrorist attacks in the U.S., it is expected that more refugees will be flowing into Pakistan. Taking this situation into consideration, in order to meet Pakistan's request and to assist Pakistan's efforts to deal with Afghan refugees, Japan has decided to extend the emergency grant aid. It is expected that, through the implementation of the emergency grant aid, water-providing activities for Afghan refugees in Pakistan will be significantly improved.
