'Perks of Being a Wallflower,' 'New Normal,' Bill Clinton honored at GLAAD Media Awards

4 hours ago | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

GLAAD Media Awards went to The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The New Normal on Saturday night for their thoughtful depictions of gay characters, while former President Bill Clinton received the inaugural Advocate for Change Award for his work campaigning to legalize same-sex marriage.

It was a redemptive moment for the ex-president, who in 1996 signed the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as a partnership only between a man and a woman. In recent years, Clinton has campaigned against anti-gay legislation proposed in various states, and has publicly called for the Supreme Court to overturn the law he once signed. »

Exclusive: Robert Zemeckis Leaves CAA

8 hours ago | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Update 7:50 Pm: I’ve  just been given this exclusive statement from Paul Bloch at Rogers & Cowan: “After a 30-year association with Creative Artists Agency, Robert Zemeckis has decided to take a hiatus with the firm and step back for the time being. Mr. Zemeckis is very appreciative of the work they have accomplished together. He has no immediate plans for representation by a different agency.” Exclusive 6:45 Pm: My sources tell me the Academy Award-winning director of Forrest Gump exited the agency on Thursday. Robert Zemeckis has been a long-time CAA client dating back to Mike Ovitz when he and Jack Rapke, now Zemeckis’ producing partner, were the director’s agents. In more recent years Zemeckis was repped by Richard Lovett at the head of a team of agents. Zemeckis’ legendary career had cooled in recent years especially because of the uneven reception of his repeated use of motion capture technology. »

‘Idol’ Producer Developing A Cappella Competition Reality Series

8 hours ago | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

A cappella singing is hot at the moment following the success of feature Pitch Perfect, about competing college a cappella groups. So American Idol producer 19 Entertainment and its parent company Core Media Group have signed an exclusive deal with Varsity Vocals, the collegiate a cappella organization that organizes the International Championship of A Cappella, to develop a show built around the competition and the college students who participate in it. I hear Varsity Vocals president Amanda Newman announced the partnership at the Icca International finals tonight in NYC. Also looking to take advantage of Pitch Perfect‘s success is Universal sibling NBC, which recently announced the revival of its a cappella competition series The Sing Off. Under the 19 Entertainment pact, Core becomes the exclusive production company with the right to shoot the Icca competition for TV. Universal just greenlighted a Pitch Perfect sequel after the original movie became a pop culture phenomenon, »

Normally an expletive uttered on live television would trigger FCC scrutiny and potential fines. But in the wake of the Boston bombings and subsequent manhunt FCC chairman Julius Genachowski made a rare exception. Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz slipped an f-bomb into an speech broadcast live before Saturday’s home game against the Kansas City Royals. “This is our f—ing city, and nobody’s going to dictate our freedom”, he said. Genachowski later Tweeted from the verified FCC account: @FCC: David Ortiz spoke from the heart at today’s Red Sox game. I stand with Big Papi and the people of Boston – Julius. »

Smash Recap: Up and Down and Over and Out

9 hours ago | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

On this week’s Smash, Bombshell finally opened (and the critics weighed in!), Ivy Lynn and Karen made crucial relationship decisions (and found time for unexpected/delightful bonding!), and speaking of (ahem) “bonding,” a naughty Tom got his freak on with…Kyle?!

Oh yes, Kyle, The Character Formerly Known as Gay Wallpaper (Tm pending), got himself a stylish  haircut, a newly discovered set of cojones and apparently the ability to quietly seduce everybody’s favorite neophyte Broadway director! Color me shock’ed!

Without a doubt, though, this was Smash‘s very best episode this season — even with Leo back in the mix! »
