Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy

The Buzz: Give partial credit to Horrible Bosses for this long-gestating comedy finally getting a green light; the two projects share the same writing team -- Jonathan M. Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who saw their rivaling magician screenplay pushed to the forefront after their workplace comedy scored with audiences. The on-screen pairing of Steve Carell and Jim Carrey should sell itself in a year that should steady Carell's career trajectory and stoke the embers that will reignite Carry's fire come Kick-Ass 2 time.

Certificate R Thriller

When veteran 911 operator Jordan Turner receives a call from a girl who has just been abducted, she soon realizes that she must confront a killer from her past in order to save the girl's life.
Director:

The Buzz: I haven't been able to consider anything else about this thriller after a friend of mine pointed out Halle Berry's wig, which might as well have its own credit in director Brad Anderson's newest puzzling career choice. Right at the beginning of 2013, Anderson's latest found itself on the radar once it was swapped into the release date previously held by the Carrie remake.

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama

Metascore: 68/100 (9 reviews)
A look at the lives of two teenage girls - inseparable friends Ginger and Rosa -- growing up in 1960s London, and the pivotal event the comes to redefine their relationship as the Cuban Missile Crisis looms.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Challenging writer/director Sally Potter (The Tango Lesson/Orlando) is back on the radar with a coming-of-age story set in 1960s London and co-starring our favorite Fanning and Alice Englert, the daughter of Jane Campion who is poised for a breakout with Beautiful Creatures. Next up for A24, the movie's distributor, is the buzzing Spring Breakers.

Certificate PG   -   Animation | Drama | Family

A group of Yokohama teens look to save their school's clubhouse from the wrecking ball in preparations for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: This Studio Ghibli project serves as the first official collaboration between director Goro Miyazaki and his father, legendary storyteller Hayao Miyazaki, who wrote the screenplay. The hand-drawn film was the top domestic release in Japan in 2011.

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama | Fantasy | Romance | Sci-Fi

Adam and Eden fell in love as teens despite the fact that they live on twinned worlds with gravities that pull in opposite directions. Ten years after a forced separation, Adam sets out on a dangerous quest to reconnect with his love.
Director:

The Buzz: The thing I love about the sci-fi genre: ambitious films can earn ardent fans and just as many passionate detractors. I sense Juan Solanas's ambitious feature might generate such a divide with its twinned worlds, class themes, and epic romantic gestures. Considering the fates that befell Across the Universe and Cloud Atlas, maybe the third time's the charm for Jim Sturgess? Conversely, the genre seems to suit Kirsten Dunst just fine, what with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Melancholia being two of the brightest stars on her resume.

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Drama

Metascore: 64/100 (4 reviews)
Luciano is a charming fishmonger whose unexpected and sudden obsession with being a contestant on a reality show leads him down a rabbit hole of skewed perceptions and paranoia.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Matteo Garrone's new work is a lighter affair that hasn't generate as much talk as his crime-world masterstroke, Gomorrah, despite the fact that his star, Aniello Arena, has been imprisoned for some two decades (for murder, reportedly) and was only allowed to shoot the film during the days. Garrone's star belongs to an acting troupe that is based at the Volterra Detention Center and able to perform at festivals and theaters around Italy; Garrone wanted to cast Arena in Gomorrah but was unable to get clearance for that project. Could someone make this documentary?

Certificate R Action | Thriller

Disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack; using his inside knowledge, Banning works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: This project came together quickly. It's as if Gerard Butler suddenly remembered that audiences like him most in action mode and Antoine Fuqua gave up yet again on that Pablo Escobar project and another script, Prisoners (which will now serve as director Denis Villeneuve's follow-up to the pretty brilliant Incendies). In a year where we will be treated to at least two projects with a similar theme, Olympus is no exception; months from now we can compare it to White House Down.

Certificate PG   -   Animation | Adventure | Comedy | Family

The world's very first prehistoric family goes on a road trip to an uncharted and fantastical world.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Though DreamWorks Animation has remained mostly mute on this project, what has me primed is the presence of co-director Chris Sanders, who has co-captained How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch with Dean DeBlois. In development since at least 2005, the project was almost made with Aardman Animations, and John Cleese had an early hand in the screenplay.

Certificate PG-13 Comedy

A Princeton admissions officer who is up for a major promotion takes a professional risk after she meets a college-bound alternative school kid who just might be the son she gave up years ago in a secret adoption.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Tina Fey + Paul Rudd = considerable comedic promise. But (1) Fey had no hand in this screenplay; (2) Paul Weitz has lost his directorial touch since About a Boy; and (3) the first trailer is warm-hearted, but is it truly funny?

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Crime | Drama

Metascore: 52/100 (6 reviews)
Four college girls who land in jail after robbing a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation find themselves bailed out by a drug and arms dealer who wants them to do some dirty work.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Outsider filmmaker Harmony Korine -- who is somehow 40, FYI -- has been flirting with the mainstream ever since his crazy/beautiful casting for his latest project, a look at a group of college girls who go buck wild. Co-star Selena Gomez hit the press circuit recently to advise her core fans to steer clear here -- the kind of warning that can only inspire real-life rebellion. James Franco's amalgamation of white rappers have kept his character's actions front and center, too, including key scenes that showcase some of his innate carnal talents.

Certificate PG-13   -   Biography | Comedy | Drama | Musical

Metascore: 64/100 (7 reviews)
It's 1968, and four young, talented Australian Aboriginal girls learn about love, friendship and war when their all girl group The Sapphires entertain the US troops in Vietnam.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: The presence of Chris O'Dowd -- so funny in general and so spot-on as the voice of the tech generation on "Girls" -- should help lure a wider audience into seeing director Wayne Blair's debut, which has reminded festival audiences that Australia makes crowd-pleasers as well as harrowing crime dramas. (Mental, which reunites Toni Collete with her Muriel's Wedding director P.J. Hogan, is another love note to the art house from Down Under.

Certificate R   -   Comedy

Metascore: 60/100 (5 reviews)
As his lover announces her pregnancy, a fortysomething slacker receives other life-changing news: 142 people, all of them the result of artificial insemination, have filed a class action lawsuit against him, their biological father.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Hollywood has struck out over the last few years, having released several variations on the artificial-insemination comedy, so we were surprised to see that Canadian filmmaker Ken Scott has successfully mounted an A-list remake that will shoot later this year.

Crime | Drama

When their latest work is buffed by a rival crew, two determined graffiti writers embark on an elaborate plan to bomb the ultimate location: the New York Mets' Home Run Apple.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Adam Leon's debut has become a favorite of the SXSW scene, a testament to the effectiveness of scrappy filmmaking, and a New York reminder that the cool stuff isn't happening in Manhattan anymore.

Certificate PG-13 Drama | Romance | War

When a young soldier in Vietnam gets dumped by his hometown girl, he and his best friend decide to go AWOL and return to the States to win her back.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: No, Liam Hemsworth is not in another Nicholas Sparks movie, but from the sound of the story and the look of the poster, even we were looking for the novelist's name in these credits.

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi | Thriller

The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: The action figure franchise has really doubled-down with its follow-up to 2009's Rise of Cobra by adding bigger star power (The Rock, RZA and Bruce Willis as the original Joe!) and a midsummer release date that proves Hasbro has confidence this can pull a Fast and Furious-like improvement over its predecessor. Go Joe!

Certificate PG-13 Action | Adventure | Romance | Sci-Fi | Thriller

When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Twilight author Stephenie Meyer's other lit sensation does not have any sequels in place just yet, though Meyer said they have been outlined. Chances are everyone in her circle will wait to see how the movie performs; if it's a smash, perhaps The Seeker will be announced after opening weekend.

Certificate PG-13 Drama

A marriage counselor's life become complicated after she enters into an increasingly obsessive relationship behind her husband's back.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Tyler Perry hurried his newest Madea outing after Good Deeds underperformed, but he's busier than ever with two more somber-minded directing projects and an eyebrow-raising lead role as the new iteration of detective Alex Cross for director Rob Cohen (there goes the other eyebrow). Counselor is the project that had some people up in arms after Kim Kardashian was cast in a supporting role, while others remarked at how much star Jurnee Smollett had grown up since Eve's Bayou. Thematically, Perry isn't breaking any new ground, and I expect a his winning streak will remain unbroken this year (behind the camera, anyway).

Certificate R   -   Crime | Drama

Metascore: 77/100 (5 reviews)
A motorcycle stunt rider turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover and their newborn child, a decision that puts him on a collision course with an ambitious rookie cop navigating a department ruled by a corrupt detective.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Hopefully Ryan Gosling's second project with writer/director Derek Cianfrance will reconfirm that Blue Valentine provided Gosling with his best role to date while Rose Byrne continues to build an admirable string of big- and small-screen successes and Bradley Cooper gets some much-needed tarnish on his near-perfect face. And, yes, we too think the premise recalls Drive a bit too much on paper.

Certificate Not Rated   -   Documentary

Metascore: 87/100 (6 reviews)
A subjective documentary that explores the numerous theories about the hidden meanings within Stanley Kubrick's film The Shining. The film may be over 30 years old but it continues to inspire debate, speculation, and mystery. Five very different points of view are illuminated through voice over, film clips, animation and dramatic reenactments. Together they'll draw the audience into a new maze, one with endless detours and dead ends, many ways in, but no way out.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Rodney Ascher's work is billed as a "subjective documentary" on hidden meanings in the film version of The Shining. It's definitely a crowd pleaser for people who thought the world might end last year, or those who have played Dark Side of the Moon while watching The Wizard of Oz. Interviewees offer up a series of insights that blur the line between credibility and fanaticism, but Ascher knows how to respect his cast while entertaining his audience. The notion that Stanley Kubrick created the film as a way of dealing with his feelings about the Holocaust and American imperialism are viable, while some people take what can only be continuity errors to another level of our obsessive search for meaning. More than anything, the documentary is a testament to Ascher's editing skills, as he recontextualizes footage from Kubrick's oeuvre with a deft hand.

  -   Comedy | Drama

A charismatic, crazy hothead transforms a family's life when she becomes the nanny of five girls whose mother has cracked from her husband's political ambitions and his infidelity.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Nice to see Toni Collette back with her Muriel's Wedding director P.J. Hogan, but from the sound of things, we won't be quoting this crazy-nanny comedy some twenty years after its release. Ah, the 1990s ...

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama

A twist on the Snow White fairy tale that is set in 1920s Seville and centered on a female bullfighter.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: This silent, black-and-white version of the Snow White tale recently took the Best Picture Goya in its native Spain, as well as Best Actress for Maribel Verdu, Best Original Screenplay, and seven other awards, eclipsing The Impossible as the top Spanish film of the year. The trailer is a thing of beauty.

  -   Action | Adventure | Crime | Thriller

Ex-criminal Jacob Sternwood is forced to return to London when his son is involved in a heist gone wrong. This gives his nemesis, detective Max Lewinsky, one last chance to catch the man he's always been after.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: While James McAvoy is having an indie-film year before getting back in Charles Xavier mode in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. Next up: he'll been seen in Trance, Danny Boyle's apparent return to his thriller roots. This is a polite way of saying there's minimal buzz for his turn here as a cop out to bring down his longtime target.

Certificate Not Rated   -   Comedy | Drama

Dolph Springer wakes up one morning to realize he has lost the love of his life, his dog, Paul. During his quest to get Paul (and his life) back, Dolph radically changes the lives of others -- risking his sanity all the while.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Quentin Dupieux might be a film-festival programmer's dream with his surrealistic narrative approach, oddball visuals, and composer alter ego (Mr. Oizo). I'm sure it was a blast to see Rubber, his last outing, in a theater full of pepped-up journalists and general film enthusiasts, but personally the hype didn't translate the two separate times I watched it. That said, the presence of William Fichtner playing a "professional pet lover", combined with a relatable premise (a missing dog instead of a killer tire), might be the sort of hyper-realistic adventure we all need this season.
