Opening This Week - March 15

Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy

Metascore: 44/100 (35 reviews)
When a street magician's stunt begins to make their show look stale, superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone and Anton Marvelton look to salvage on their act - and their friendship - by staging their own daring stunt.
Director:

The Buzz: Give partial credit to Horrible Bosses for this long-gestating comedy finally getting a green light (the two projects share the same writing team: Jonathan M. Goldstein and John Francis Daley), but, surprisingly, the pairing of Steve Carell and Jim Carrey is shaping up to be another potential under-performer for Warner Bros. (the studio's first four releases this year have struggled: Gangster Squad; Bullet to the Head; Beautiful Creatures; and Jack the Giant Slayer). Hey, it's not like Horrible was shaping up to be a hit, and now a sequel is officially a go, so the real trick is for the movie to pull off a better-than-expected opening weekend.

Certificate R Thriller

Metascore: 52/100 (19 reviews)
When veteran 911 operator Jordan Turner receives a call from a girl who has just been abducted, she soon realizes that she must confront a killer from her past in order to save the girl's life.

The Buzz: I haven't been able to consider anything else about this thriller after a friend of mine pointed out Halle Berry's wig, which might as well have its own credit in director Brad Anderson's newest puzzling career choice. Right at the beginning of 2013, Anderson's latest found itself on the radar once it was swapped into the release date previously held by the Carrie remake.

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama

Metascore: 69/100 (18 reviews)
A look at the lives of two teenage girls - inseparable friends Ginger and Rosa -- growing up in 1960s London as the Cuban Missile Crisis looms, and the pivotal event the comes to redefine their relationship.
Director:

The Buzz: Challenging writer/director Sally Potter (The Tango Lesson/Orlando) is back on the radar with a coming-of-age story set in 1960s London and co-starring our favorite Fanning and Alice Englert, the daughter of Jane Campion who just starred in the barely seen Beautiful Creatures.

Certificate PG   -   Animation | Drama | Family

Metascore: 71/100 (9 reviews)
A group of Yokohama teens look to save their school's clubhouse from the wrecking ball in preparations for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
Director:

The Buzz: This Studio Ghibli project serves as the first official collaboration between director Goro Miyazaki and his father, legendary storyteller Hayao Miyazaki, who wrote the screenplay. The hand-drawn film was the top domestic release in Japan in 2011.

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama | Fantasy | Romance | Sci-Fi

Metascore: 41/100 (17 reviews)
Adam and Eden fell in love as teens despite the fact that they live on twinned worlds with gravities that pull in opposite directions. Ten years after a forced separation, Adam sets out on a dangerous quest to reconnect with his love.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: The thing I love about the sci-fi genre: ambitious films can earn ardent fans and just as many passionate detractors. I sense Juan Solanas's ambitious feature might generate such a divide with its twinned worlds, class themes, and epic romantic gestures. Considering the fates that befell Across the Universe and Cloud Atlas, maybe the third time's the charm for Jim Sturgess? Conversely, the genre seems to suit Kirsten Dunst just fine, what with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Melancholia being two of the brightest stars on her resume.

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Drama

Metascore: 73/100 (13 reviews)
Luciano is a charming fishmonger whose unexpected and sudden obsession with being a contestant on a reality show leads him down a rabbit hole of skewed perceptions and paranoia.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Matteo Garrone's new work is a lighter affair that hasn't generate as much talk as his crime-world masterstroke, Gomorrah, despite the fact that his star, Aniello Arena, has been imprisoned for some two decades (for murder, reportedly) and was only allowed to shoot the film during the days. Garrone's star belongs to an acting troupe that is based at the Volterra Detention Center and able to perform at festivals and theaters around Italy; Garrone wanted to cast Arena in Gomorrah but was unable to get clearance for that project. Could someone make this documentary?

- [Opens in NYC and LA; expands 3/22]

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Crime | Drama

Metascore: 64/100 (17 reviews)
Four college girls who land in jail after robbing a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation find themselves bailed out by a drug and arms dealer who wants them to do some dirty work.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Outsider filmmaker Harmony Korine -- who is somehow 40, FYI -- has been flirting with the mainstream ever since his crazy/beautiful casting for his latest project, a look at a group of college girls who go buck wild. Co-star Selena Gomez hit the press circuit recently to advise her core fans to steer clear here -- the kind of warning that can only inspire real-life rebellion. James Franco's amalgamation of white rappers have kept his character's actions front and center, too, including key scenes that showcase some of his innate carnal talents.

Certificate R Comedy

Jennifer's thirtieth birthday party is supposed to be a special day. But what starts out as a day of celebration quickly spirals into a most ill-fated day Jennifer wishes she could forget, in this ensemble comedy set entirely in a kitchen.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: The kitchen tends to be the best place to stake out territory at a house party, and the setting has helped indie director Ishai Setton enjoy his highest profile release to date. Laura Prepon is tasked with keeping it together while her romantic life is exposed to a series of drama bombs, and we hear that Dreama Walker -- from Compliance infamy -- kills it in her supporting role.

Metascore: 42/100 (13 reviews)
Hip Hop artist Snoop Dogg changes his name to Snoop Lion, travels to Jamaica, emerges himself in Rastafarian culture and produces his first reggae record.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: In his tireless campaign for creative fluidity and cultural relevancy, Snoop Dogg rechristened himself as Snoop Lion, embraced the music of Jamaica, and let the cameras roll as he recorded his first reggae album with Diplo. It's not as funny as anything on his wickedly high YouTube channel, and we think that's the objective.

  -   Drama

Metascore: 21/100 (6 reviews)
A record producer comes around after binging on drink and drugs. He finds himself in a section of the Los Angeles County Jail reserved for homosexuals, which is ruled by a transsexual named Mousey.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Jules Stewart -- yes, Kristen's mom -- makes her directorial debut after spending the first several decades of her career as a script supervisor (her TV credits are more impressive than her big-screen resume). Pre-Twilight Kristen was attached to the project, and we imagine her current handlers are happy their star isn't on the press beat talking about the story's "maze of drug addled-transvestite-criminal politics" -- but it sounds like a perfect transitional role given her post-Bella/post-Pattinson status.

- [Limited]

Certificate G   -   Documentary

A documentary that follows the R&B;/hip-hop boy band as they travel across the US on their first major headlining tour.
Director:

The Buzz: Mindless Direction started their ascent right around the same time as One Direction's, and personally we love seeing an audience of young African-American girls screaming for their current heroes, who seem to have a good run ahead of them.
