Preventing venous thromboembolism (resources from RCN)

Visit the Royal College of Nursing Professional Development pages based on the NICE guideline, 'Venous thromboembolism: reducing the risk' and focusing primarily on understanding and preventing VTE, identifying patients at risk and includes an in-depth look at VTE risk assessments.

This learning area has been primarily developed for student nurses, registered nurses, registered midwives and healthcare assistants who may be routinely dealing with patients at risk of developing venous thromboembolism (VTE). Student and registered nurses will also find this learning opportunity relevant for updating their own awareness of VTE, how it develops and how it can be prevented. Registered nurses and midwives may also wish to use this material to raise the awareness of colleagues for whom they have responsibility.

This resource was developed independently by the Royal College of Nursing and has been adapted from NICE guidance with supplementary practical information, with the intention of reflecting the content of the NICE guidance, and facilitating its implementation. NICE fully supports the use of the guidance with this intention. NICE has undertaken a check of the resource at the point at which this link was published and is satisfied that it broadly supports the guidance. However NICE is unable to confirm that all of the content at any one time accurately reflects the guidance, and therefore no guarantees are given either by NICE in this regard. If an individual clinician has any queries or concerns about the relationship between NICE guidance and this educational resource they should always refer to the original guidance published by NICE, and this should in all cases be regarded as the only definitive statement of the guidance. The NICE clinical guideline may be found at www.nice.org.uk/cg92
