Featured Professorship • The Mudter Professorship in Cancer Research was established to support a professor with an outstanding national and international reputation who's made a significant impact in both teaching and research. Michael "Hawkeye" Pierce as taught for 26 years and has been at UGA since 1998. He took over as director of the University of Georgia Cancer Center in 2004 and was named a distinguished research professor in 2006. He's been the recipient of grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Heart Association, among others. He is the editor of the Handbook of Glycomics, on the editorial board of the journal Glycobiology, and the holder of 13 U.S. patents.

Featured Scholarship • Thanks to $1 million from the Coca-Cola Foundation, 50 students who are the first in their families to attend college will receive Coca-Cola First Generation College scholarships, worth $5,000 a year.

Featured Faculty • Bala Sarasvati, the first Jane Willson Professor in Arts, is an innovative modern dancer, choreographer and teacher. As a member of the Franklin College's Department of Dance, she teaches dance composition, improvisation, modern technique, Laban Movement Analysis and the science of dance training. She served as head of the department from 1999 to 2006. Her choreography, including more than 40 dance pieces, encompasses traditional modern, post-modern, experimental and interdisciplinary works, and often incorporates different media, including computer technology, to create visual and audio effects.

Featured Project • Thanks to the support of its patrons and friends, the Georgia Museum of Art raised $20 million in private support to fund an expansion and renovation project that will consist of new galleries, an outdoor sculpture garden, an expanded lobby, and much-needed storage space.

Featured Program • A donation from Rob and Jean Fowler and BB&T; Bank to endow a UGA Extension 4-H agent will make it possible for more young people in Jasper County to develop leadership and citizenship skills. It's the first such endowment in the country. Kasey Reid, who now fills the new position, will help teach character development and wellness along with research, presentation, and life skills.
