A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)
John McClane travels to Russia to help out his seemingly wayward son, Jack, only to discover that Jack is a CIA operative working to prevent a nuclear-weapons heist, causing the father and son to team up against underworld forces.
Director:John Moore |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: As fitting as it is to slot Jai Courtney in the role of John McClane's son, the Die Hard saga needs more than youth to truly revitalize our interest. Both Expendables movies and Red have proved that aging action heroes can be more than just a box-office draw - they can also be pop-culture events as they lay waste to whippersnappers over opening weekend.
Beautiful Creatures (2013) - [2/14]
Ethan longs to escape his small Southern town. He meets a mysterious new girl, Lena. Together, they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town.
Director:Richard LaGravenese |

The Buzz: Warner Brothers might not ever replicate the success of the Harry Potter franchise, but this four-book series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl has potential to thrill die-hard fans of Ethan Wate and Lena Duchannes while introducing newbies to the secrets of Gatlin County. I like how the studio has followed the Potter model of getting adult-oriented filmmakers to handle youth-skewing source material; in this case, screenplay doctor and sometime director Richard LaGravenese might find his greatest success to date. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to seeing more Jack O'Connell, yet another cast member from the defunt program Skins who is getting a Hollywood shot. Playing the mysterious Lena is Alice Englert -- aka Jane Campion's daughter -- in her first major role.
Safe Haven (2013) - [2/14]
A young woman with a mysterious past lands in Southport, North Carolina where her bond with a widower forces her to confront the dark secret that haunts her.
Director:Lasse Hallström |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Lasse Hallström appears to have found safe haven translating the work of Nicholas Sparks into hit movies, but let's see how audiences react to a story that incorporates domestic-abuse themes over Valentine's Day weekend.
No (2012) - [Limited]
An ad executive comes up with a campaign to defeat Augusto Pinochet in Chile's 1988 referendum.
Director:Pablo Larraín |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Pablo Larraín fourth film is poised to be in Stateside breakthrough; even before it earned its Best Foreign Language Oscar nomination, the story of an ad exec's work to bring down Pinochet's tyrannical reign over Chile was picking up accolades across the world for Larraín's 1980s period details and Gael Garcia Bernal's performance as René Saavedra. Might we see renewed (and deserved) interest in Larraín's Tony Manero and Post Mortem?
A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III (2012) - [Expands]
A graphic designer's enviable life slides into despair when his girlfriend breaks up with him.
Director:Roman Coppola |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The first trailer didn't quite stoke my enthusiasm for Roman Coppola's follow-up to the visual achievement that was CQ, but I have faith that his new work is much more than a costume party starring Charlie Sheen. And if I'm wrong, I will finally side with a close friend who asserts that there is no space in the current art world for musings of the Coppola Aristocracy.
Escape from Planet Earth (2013)
Astronaut Scorch Supernova finds himself caught in a trap when he responds to an SOS from a notoriously dangerous alien planet.
Director:Cal Brunker |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The Weinstein Company is an Oscar-winning powerhouse, for sure, but they haven't fared well in the lucrative world of animated movies. Here, the studio took a script from their Hoodwinked! co-directors and refashioned the space adventure to a point where Harvey & co. found themselves in a messy, sad, and fascinating lawsuit with the creators.
Like Someone in Love (2012) - [Limited]- Drama
In Tokyo, a young prostitute develops an unexpected connection with a widower over a period of two days.
Director:Abbas Kiarostami |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Let's get mystified by the latest from the director of Certified Copy, Abbas Kiarostami. Critics have been slightly let down by Kirostami's latest - unsurprising since Copy is a certified masterwork - but thematic motifs and memorable scenes abound.
The Power of Few (2013) - [Limited]
Religious conspiracy collides with urban crime in a story told from multiple perspectives.
Director:Leone Marucci |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Q'orianka Kilcher -- remember her as Pocahontas in The New World? -- produces and co-stars in indie film vet Leone Marucci's innovative project, which invited online viewers to help author the story's ending in a contest run on the project's official site back in 2011.
