The class of 1948

'Our health history'

This is the story of a class of children who were at school in Cornwall in 1948, the year the NHS began. We traced them in 2008 to find out what had happened to their health.

Enid Mutton

Enid Mutton

Enid has been in excellent health for most of her life, eating a diet of home-grown, home-cooked food.

Ivan Irons

Although he had rheumatic fever as a young man, Ivan has gone on to lead a healthy, active life. His only health concern now is his knee.

Raymond Doidge

Ray’s overall health has been good. But he broke his foot in 2003, which led to hospitalisation and suspected MRSA, and has diabetes.

Mr Oates, the headmaster

Mr Oates was the headmaster. He ate a high-fat diet and smoked but was generally healthy until he "dropped dead” on Christmas Day 1972.

Keith Curtis

Keith worked as a fisherman in Devon, but died in 1991, aged 55, when his deep-sea trawler sank off the Kent coast.

Norman Sandercock

Norman, known as Joe, was a stonemason for 40 years. He died in 2001, aged 67, of a heart problem.

Alan Carter from Tintagel

Alan Carter

Alan has diabetes and polymyalgia rheumatica, has suffered from back pain, and had an operation to open blocked arteries.

Amy Parsons

Amy moved to Gloucestershire and died of cancer of the pancreas in 2000, aged 65.

Celia Cann from Tintagel

Celia Cann

Celia eats lots of fresh veg, keeps active by Scottish dancing, doesn't smoke, and has no major illnesses.

David Cann

David had pneumonia, TB and pleurisy in the 50s but has lived a healthy life since then, apart from problems with his eyesight.

David Flower

David had a pressurised job and ate bacon and eggs every day until he had a heart attack in 1992. He has diabetes.

Dennis Johnson

Dennis eats healthily, is active and doesn't drink but he smokes and has had bronchitis. He has some minor ailments including a cyst.

Doreen Hoskin

Doreen had TB in her youth and believes the medication is what caused her kidneys to fail in later life. Until then she was fit and healthy.

Gloria Paul

Gloria died in 2003, aged 68, of oesophageal cancer that had also spread to the brain.

Joyce Winnacott

Joyce died of colon cancer at 42, leaving her husband Malcolm to care for their three young children.

Lena Dyer

In 2003 Lena had a hip replacement and after only a few weeks of walking with a stick she was back to normal and playing bowls.

Leonard Knight

Len ran a pub and he ate healthily but drank and smoked a lot. He had a knee operation recently and acquired an infection while in hospital.

Margaret Dangar

Margaret’s health was good all her life until she developed rheumatoid arthritis in 1997, which restricts her mobility.

Rose Dyer

Apart from high blood pressure, Rose has had excellent health all her life, cycling everywhere and eating healthily.

Trevor Doidge

Trevor was Ray Doidge’s cousin. Trevor died in 1999 aged 65 of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Valerie Brown

Valerie got married in 1954 but cannot be traced.
