UGA Alumnus Takes Appointment as US Chargé d’ Affaires to Libya

It never ceases to amaze me how far and wide UGA graduates are spread across the world. Recently, William Roebuck (JD ’92) arrived in Tripoli to take up his position as the U.S. Chargé d’ Affaires to Libya. The alumnus will continue the work of Laurence Pope, who has served in that capacity since October 2011. Pope took over following the death of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens during an assault on the US Consulate in Benghazi.

Roebuck said he looks forward to working with the Libyan government and the Libyan people as the U.S. continues to build the relationship between the two countries. Roebuck has been in the foreign service since 1992. Prior to joining the State Department, he served as a volunteer in the Peace Corps, teaching English in the Ivory Coast, and worked as an English teacher and school administrator at a Saudi military school in Saudi Arabia from 1982 to 1987.

Congratulations to William Roebuck for being selected for this role during such an important time for both Libya and the U.S. I have no doubt that Roebuck’s vast experience in foreign affairs and in the region will serve him well. The UGA Alumni Association is honored to have such a distinguished diplomat representing our alma mater. We wish him the best and will pray for his continued safety in all that he does.

UGA Alumna Inspires Others to Take it to the Next Level

Karen Steadman (PhD ’99) promotes “Working Smarter, Not Harder.” The alumna is president of Leadership Futures, Inc., an executive leadership development firm. In this role, Steadman advises organizations and their key talent on how to work more effectively and efficiently. Her top goal is to help others reach their highest potentials.

During her time in Athens, Steadman completed her Ph.D. in counseling psychology. She also graduated summa cum laude from Georgia Tech with a degree in industrial and systems engineering.

Steadman’s accomplishments include serving as a faculty member of the Global Institute for Leadership Development; completing a speaking series in China; and having her case studies featured in books such as The Transparency Edge: How Credibility Can Make or Break You in Business and Coaching Corporate MVP’s. These days, Steadman is also helping coordinate The Society of Consulting Psychology’s  Midwinter Conference. This conference will take place in Atlanta from February 7 through 10, and will bring psychology professionals together to share information and spur innovation in their shared field.

Karen Steadman found success in a variety of personal pursuits and now seeks to inspire others to reach the next level themselves. UGA alumni and friends are proud of her accomplishments and we look forward to a new generation of leaders that she helps “work smarter, not harder.”

For more information on the conference, visit the event website.

Augusta Native Earl V. Rogers (BBA ’76) to lead Georgia Hospital Association

On behalf of the UGA Alumni Association, I want to congratulation Earl V. Rogers (BBA ’76) who recently became president and CEO of the Georgia Hospital Association.

Rogers, GHA’s senior vice president for government relations, will succeed the retiring Joseph Parker on July 1. Parker had been president and CEO since 1986. According to GHA, Rogers was considered a clear choice as Parker’s successor.

Rogers currently lives in the Atlanta area and earned his degree in management from the Terry College of Business. Previously, Rogers served as the main lobbyist for the Georgia Chamber of Commerce from 1996 to 2005.

His decades of stewardship to the state of Georgia and the University of Georgia are certainly worthy of this recognition. We look forward to Rogers’s continued successes with the Georgia Hospital Association. Go Dawgs!

UGA Graduate Named 2012 Young Realtor of the Year

The 2012 Young Realtor of the Year award is presented by the Atlanta Commercial Board of Realtors (ACBR) to a landlord representative who takes pride in doing his job well, knows how to shepherd a deal from start to finish, and is described as a natural leader.

A native of Dublin, Georgia, ProLogis Inc. Leasing Manager Ryan Hoyt (BBA ’02) says he grew up with a strong interest in real estate. He graduated from UGA with a bachelor’s degree in real estate, then immediately joined the Atlanta office of Grubb & Ellis, where he worked as a tenant representative for three years.

In early 2006, Hoyt made his move to the landlord side of the business, going to work for TPA Realty Services LLC as a senior leasing associate. In 2007, the Terry graduate continued to hone his real estate skills, starting what turned into a five-year stint as vice president of leasing at Jackson Oats Shaw Corporate Real Estate LLC.

Hoyt joined ProLogis last October, where he leads leasing efforts for the San Francisco-based REIT in Metro Atlanta’s Northeast submarket.

The ACBR gives the Young Realtor of the Year award to members of its Young Council of Realtors who demonstrate realtor spirit, civic activity and business accomplishments, as well as activity with the Young Council, the board and state and national realtor associations.

We are proud of Hoyt’s accomplishments. It is wonderful to see a graduate make such a positive impact in their community at such a young age. Congratulations to Ryan Hoyt for being named the 2012 Young Realtor of the Year by the ACBR. We look forward to your continued success in real estate.

The Perfect Valentine’s Day Gift for Your Bulldog Sweetheart

It is hard to believe Valentine’s Day is only one month from today. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised–the stores have transitioned from aisles of red and green décor to rows of pink and red candy. Despite the many options, selecting the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for that special someone can be stressful. Lucky for UGA alumni and friends across the country, UGA Alumni Association sponsor FTD is here to save the day with its official Georgia Bulldogs Rose Bouquet.

In my opinion, what better way is there to show your appreciation for someone than with FTD’s special red and white roses in a glass vase etched with the Georgia “G?” It’s perfect for when “I love you” needs a little something extra … like “Go Dawgs.” Whether it’s for the love of your life, a family member or close friend, the Georgia Bulldogs Rose Bouquet is the perfect way to brighten the day of those important to you. Regardless of the occasion, it’s always great to be a Georgia Bulldog.

Let our friends at FTD take the hassle out of gift-giving this year. Each bouquet comes with a free personalized message, and procrastination is no match for their same-day delivery service. This Valentine’s Day, celebrate with the important Bulldogs in your life.
