The New Georgia Encyclopedia is the first state encyclopedia to be conceived and designed exclusively for publication on the Internet. By opening a window to Georgia's rich history, diverse culture, and still-unfolding story, the New Georgia Encyclopedia is an authoritative and important resource. As an online endeavor, the NGE is an organic, "living" project—content can be continually added, and existing content can be updated, as resources allow. Facts • As of January 2011, the NGE features more than 2,050 articles and more than 6,200 multimedia objects (images, video and audio clips). • About 800 writers have contributed to the NGE. • The site receives 1-2 million page views each month. • The NGE is a founding member of IDEA, the Internet Digital Encyclopedia Alliance. • The New Georgia Encyclopedia is a project of the Georgia Humanities Council in partnership with the University of Georgia Press, the University System of Georgia/GALILEO, and the Office of the Governor. • The website was developed and designed by Merrill-Hall New Media. • The website is hosted by GALILEO, the state's virtual library. Milestones • In 2011 The Civil War in Georgia: A New Georgia Encyclopedia Companion was published by the University of Georgia Press. Edited by John C. Inscoe, this print anthology features articles—originally published online by the NGE—that cover the prelude to the war, the war years, and the war's legacy. • Inaugural New Georgia Encyclopedia Award for "Best Project on a Georgia Topic" was given at the Georgia Council for the Social Studies' annual social studies fair in March 2010. • Completed a project with the Digital Library of Georgia in 2009 to add metadata to the images on the site, which improves search functionality for users. • Collaborated with the Digital Library of Georgia on the Civil Rights Digital Library, which launched in 2008. • In 2007 The New Georgia Encyclopedia Companion to Georgia Literature was published by the University of Georgia Press. This print anthology of articles—originally published online by the NGE—contains biographical profiles of Georgia writers as well as critical discussions of works and organizations integral to the literary history and culture of the state. • In a dramatic virtual ribbon-cutting ceremony at the state capitol, the site officially launched on February 12, 2004 (Georgia History Day), with about 700 articles.
