- Malawi - Student Encyclopedia (Ages 11 and up)
A landlocked country in Southern Africa, Malawi was known as Nyasaland until 1964. More than 520 miles (830 kilometers) long and up to 100 miles (160 kilometers) wide, it extends along the western shore of Lake Nyasa (which is also known as Lake Malawi) and down the Shire River valley. Malawi is bounded by Tanzania to the north, Mozambique to the east and south, and Zambia to the west. Lilongwe is the capital, though the judiciary meets in Blantyre.
