The M. G. Michael Award

The M. G. Michael Award was established in 1944 to stimulate new initiatives in scholarship in all areas of the Arts and Sciences. Its primary purpose is to encourage the development of a new (and perhaps adventurous) idea or project during the coming year. The Award implies faith in that purpose and in the ability of the faculty member selected to plan and conduct the proposed research; it is not given in recognition of previous research accomplishments. Nevertheless, it does require evidence that recipients have been proficient researchers.

The Award, which recognizes excellence in research, includes a grant of $3,000. This year a grant will be available for each of three recipients of the Michael Award. The recipient is expected to conduct the research he or she has proposed and to submit a final report to the Dean fifteen months after receiving the grant.

All faculty of the Franklin College are eligible for the Award with the exception of those who have won the award in the past five years. Applications are due in the Dean’s Office by October 18, 2012 at noon. Please submit an electronic copy of the application (pdf preferred) c/o dgoswick {at} uga dt edu. Announcements of the Award's recipients shall be made in late spring at the annual Awards luncheon hosted by the Franklin College.

Proposals (not to exceed five pages) shall adhere to the following format: 

• Introduction (a brief, non-technical summary of proposed research);
• Description of methods;
• Statement of the project's significance (expected results from the project, and its significance to the proposer's discipline);
• Evidence of the applicant's proficiency in research (list of applicant's publications, previous grants, and awards).
