Bi-Cheng Wang, Ph.D.
Structural Biology
University of Georgia

Research Interests

Protein crystallography, synchrotron X-ray beamline development (www.ser-cat.org), direct determination of unlabelled native protein structures by sulfur phasing. Structure determination of g-globin promoter complexes, human oxytocin receptor and human membrane protein receptors (the dopamine receptor, the serotonin receptor, the NMDA receptor, scab, and the olfactory receptor)

Research Vision

To enable protein crystal structure determination directly from the unlabelled native crystals. To build at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory a dedicated longer wavelength beamline for structural biology. To enable membrane protein structure determination by sulfur phasing. To participate in collaborative research with colleagues who are interested in incorporating crystallography in their interdisciplinary research.

In the Lab

Participating in the determinations of selected protein structures. Engaging in X-ray methodology development projects. Managing the operations and facility upgrades of the Southeast Regional Collaborative Access Team's (SER-CAT) beamlines (www.ser-cat.org) located at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory).

Why Georgia?

The strong commitment from the University of Georgia and the Georgia Research Alliance to building world-class facilities for structural biology was the major reason for moving to Georgia. The continued support from the Georgia Research Alliance toward research activities in the state and research visions of its Eminent Scholars have made Georgia an excellent environment for growth and productivity in interdisciplinary, cutting edge research and provided a confirmation that it was a right decision for me to come to Georgia fifteen years ago.
