A Few Notes for Visitors of the Museum

Museums are charged with the collection, preservation, and exhibition of objects valuable to art, history, and science. Museums are also educational institutions, research agencies, and cultural centers. We want you to enjoy your visit to the Georgia Museum of Art, see the works of art, and have the pleasure of discovering new things in the galleries. It is our duty to protect these works of art while making them available for your pleasure.

Please help us by reviewing and observing the visitor guidelines.

Check Large Items

Items, such as purses, parcels, briefcases, and backpacks which measure more than 8 1/2 x 11 x 6 inches, and all umbrellas must be checked in the coat room. The Georgia Museum of Art does not assume responsibility for lost or stolen articles.

Eating, Drinking, Smoking and Chewing Gum

Food and drink are not allowed in the galleries. Smoking is prohibited in the museum. Gum must be disposed of appropriately.

Decorum

Unruly behavior, such as running or jumping, and loud conversation are not permissible in the Georgia Museum of Art.

The 8-Inch Rule

PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH any work of art. The slightest touch to the surface of a work of art can create permanent damage, which may be visible immediately. Please stand more than eight inches from any work of art to prevent the risk of causing harm. Human breath can even cause harmful changes to the surface of a work of art.

Photography

Neither motion nor still cameras are permitted in the museum's galleries. Flash photography is not permitted- only works of art from the museum's permanent collection may be photographed with written permission from the receptionist. Camera bags, tripods, and all other large camera equipment must be checked in the coatroom. The Georgia Museum of Art does not assume responsibility for lost or stolen articles. Due to reasons of conservation and contractual obligations, this photography policy is strictly enforced.

Copying Works of Art

Drawing with a pencil on a portable sketchpad is permissible in the Georgia Museum of Art. Pens, markers, or paint are not permissible in the galleries. All other requests should be directed to the registrar's office.

Special Services for People with Disabilities

The museum is fully handicapped accessible, and wheelchairs are available. Tours for the hearing impaired are available by appointment (see tour information). Devices for the hearing impaired are also available for events held in the M. Smith Griffith Auditorium. If you desire additional assistance, please do not hesitate to ask any Georgia Museum of Art employee, we will be happy to assist you in any possible manner.
