'How to' guides

One of the key objectives within the NICE Implementation Strategy is to provide practical generic implementation tools to support the implementation of NICE guidance into practice.

One of the ways we aim to achieve this objective is to develop a series of ‘how to' guides to aid implementing NICE guidance at a local level.

In 2005, we launched How to put NICE guidance into practice: a guide to implementation for organisations. The guide was reviewed in 2011 to remove out of date references and provides brief reference to current developments. The aim is to help NHS provider organisations implement NICE guidance. This guide is an interim version while the full edition is being reviewed. A full update is due to be published in 2011.

In 2007, we launched the guide How to change practice: understand, identify and overcome the barriers to change which aims to improve patient care by providing practical advice on how to encourage healthcare professionals and managers to change practice in line with the latest guidance.

In 2008, we developed How to put NICE guidance into practice and improve the health and wellbeing of communities: practical steps for local authorities. This guide written for chief executives, their senior officers and others within local authorities who lead on different aspects of health and wellbeing has also been reviewed to update references to National organisations. This is the interim version whilst we conduct a full update due to be published during 2011-12.

In 2009 we published How to use NICE guidance to commission high quality services This guide supports commissioners in developing systems and processes that embed NICE guidance into commissioning. It explains how NICE guidance can support the commissioning of new services, the evaluation or redesign of existing services, and the decommissioning of ineffective interventions.

In 2011 we launched a new web-based resource, NICE and NHS Evidence practical support for general practice. This was developed to enable general practice professionals to improve outcomes for their patients by ensuring that their practice is up to date with current recommendations from NICE. This too will receive a full update during 2011-12.

We offer the best evidence-based information on effective services offering:
