Microsoft Office File Formats

Office

The Microsoft Office File Formats documentation provides detailed technical specifications for file formats implemented in certain Microsoft Office applications, including the binary file formats created by Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint and the Outlook Personal Folders (.pst) file format. Technical specifications for standards-based file formats implemented in Microsoft Office applications may be found in the Standards node of the Open Specifications library.

The Microsoft Office File Formats documentation also includes a set of companion introduction and reference documents that supplement the technical specifications with introductory information about the documentation set and technical reference information.

In addition to being available on this Web site, the Office File Formats documentation is also available as a download package in .zip file format:

Note that inter-document links are functional only if all PDF files are located in the same directory. An error message appears if you click a link to a PDF document that is in a different folder (when viewing on your computer) or part of a different download (when viewing online).
