Postdoctoral Research

At UGA, the postdoctoral experience emphasizes scholarship and continued research training for individuals who have recently completed a doctoral degree. Postdoctoral research scholars conduct research with a faculty mentor and contribute to the academic community by enhancing the research and education programs of the university. They bring expertise and creativity that enrich the research environment of the entire university community. UGA strives to provide a stimulating, positive, and constructive experience by emphasizing the mutual commitment and responsibility of the institution, the faculty, and the postdoctoral research scholar.

The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) oversees the policies and programs that support the postdoctoral training experience at UGA. Responsibilities include:

NOTE: Effective 1 July 2008, UGA has established policy and procedures for postdoctoral appointments. UGA faculty and personnel managers must use the routing form when appointing a new postdoctoral research scholar. This form also has information about the approval workflow for appointment.

Important Note about Health Insurance. Postdoctoral Research Associates are considered UGA employees and have access to the standard employee health insurance. Postdoctoral Research Fellows and Fellow Adjuncts have the option of signing up for the same group health insurance available to graduate students. Instructions are given under Resources on this page.
