ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball
team (8-0 OUA West) came from behind in the fourth quarter to
defeat the McMaster Marauders by the score of 75-64 Thursday night
at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
McMaster led for the entire first three quarters including 39-29 at
the half and 52-51 after 30 minutes.
To open the fourth quarter, Brock senior forward Samantha deJong
(St. Catharines, Ont.) hit a jumper to put the Badgers up for the
first time, leading 53-52 with 9:50 left in regulation. McMaster's
leading scorer Danielle Boiago would answer right back putting her
team up 54-53 with 9:35 remaining.
The Badgers would then put together a 11-0 run over the next three
minutes leading 64-54 with 6:35 left in the contest.
The Marauders would cut the lead to six, 70-64, with 2:30
remaining, but it was the Badgers extending their win streak to
eight, as they closed out the game on a 5-0 run.
Brock had three players in double figures led by junior Nicole
Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who led all scorers with 19
points, eight rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Kayla Santilli
(Brantford, Ont.) registered 18 points and four rebounds, including
going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Dejong contributed with a
double-double adding 14 points and 11 rebounds. She also recorded a
season-high four blocks.
For the Marauders, Vanessa Bonomo led the offense with 16 points.
Boiago added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Stephanie Truelove
and Hailey Milligan chipped in with 13 and 10 points respectively
in the loss.
For the game, Brock shot 51.0% from the field going 25-for-49. They
were also 35.7% (5-14) from beyond the arc and 69.0% (20-for-29)
from the charity stripe. McMaster shot a season low 25.7%
(18-for-70) from the floor, 18.2% (4-for-22) from three-point range
and 80.0% (24-for-30) from the free throw line.

GUELPH, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons women's basketball team
dropped their first game of the new year as they fell 68-64 to the
visiting Western Mustangs on Thursday night at the W.F. Mitchell
Centre. The loss drops them to 4-4 and boosts the Mustangs to
5-3. Tonight’s game will be aired on Rogers TV tape
delay this Saturday (Jan. 5) at 1:00p.m.
The Gryphons got behind early in the contest, going down by
42-25. However they wiped the rust off in the locker room and
entered the second half making a fierce comeback led by some clutch
shooting from Kayla Goodhoofd and Alexandra Beatty. Despite
outscoring the Mustangs 39-26 in the second, it was too little too
late.
Three Gryphons earned double digits with Kayla Goodhoofd
(Oakville, Ont) leading the way with 14 points. Erica McFadden
(Alma, Ont) followed closely behind with 13 points while Alyssa
Shortt (Waterloo, Ont.) netted 10.
Jenny Vaughan (Dundas, Ont) of Western led all scorers with 19
points on the night while shooting 9-10 from the charity
stripe.
Following a two game streak to end the first half of the season,
the Gryphons were unable to maintain their earlier momentum in the
opening stages of their first game back as the Mustangs jumped
ahead 7-0 in the first five minutes of play. Yet as the
quarter wound down, Erica McFadden found her groove with
much-needed five-point streak to kickstart the Gryphon offence to
close the gap as the first quarter rung out with the Mustangs ahead
14-12.
The opening of the second saw a brief burst of Gryphon ferocity
as Kayla Goodhoofd charged the paint for her first basket of the
game with the answering free throw to complete the three-point play
to give the Gryphons their first lead of the game.
Unfortunately, this momentum was short-lived as the
miscommunications on the Gryphon side mounted to give the Mustangs
an opportunity to extend their lost lead to 10 with less than five
minutes left in the half. As the Gryphon offence slowly
rebuilt momentum in the dying stages of the first, the Mustang
offence retained their tenacity to drop the Gryphons further to
42-25 at the end of the first.
The Gryphon squad finally began to show signs of life as they
opened the second half by piecing together the first streak of nine
to close the gap. Even with the persistent Mustang attack,
the Gryphon defence continued to shut down the Western presence in
the paint to outshoot the Mustangs 21-10 in the third to bring the
game to within six.
Despite the strong attack in the third, the Mustangs were the
first to strike in the fourth with a deep attack beyond the
arc. But the Gryphons were quick to regain control of the
court as they opened another 7-point streak to cut the game to
two. And while the Gryphons maintained a fierce hold on the
ball as the clock wound down, they were unable to catch the Mustang
offence as Jenny Vaughan sealed a 68-64 Mustang victory by going
1-2 from the line as the buzzer sounded.
The Gryphons look for redemption as they travel to Windsor to
take on the Lancers on January 5. Tip off is set for 6
pm.

WINDSOR, Ont.- Jessica Clemencon had a game-high 21 points and
nine rebounds, and the Windsor Lancers women's basketball team
remained undefeated on Thursday night, topping the visiting Wilfrid
Laurier Golden Hawks 68-60 to open their 2013 conference
schedule.
Miah-Marie Langlois picked up 13 points and five assists, while
Korissa Williams and Jocelyn LaRocque each added nine in the
victory for the OUA West division leaders and No. 1 CIS ranked
squad. The Golden Hawks were led by Doreen Bonsu, who tallied
14 points on the night. Laurier falls to 3-5 on the
season.
Laura Mullins notched a three-pointer less than two minutes into
the opening quarter to give the Lancers an early advantage.
Langlois (Windsor) grabbed another jumper from beyond the arc, and
the Lancers led 9-4 midway through the contest. However, some
strong post play by Whitney Ellenor led to four points in the paint
from the junior centre, and the teams were tied at 9-9 minutes
later. A late lay-up by Clemencon (St. Rambert, France) put
the home side up 13-11.
Williams (Windsor) polished off a well-placed assist from Mullins,
and Clemencon added two more on the next possession to extend the
lead at the beginning of the second. First year Caitlyn
Longmuir notched a three for the Lancers, and the Kingsville, Ont.
native was at it again minutes later, dropping another jumper to
give her team its first double-digit advantage. The defending
champs took a 38-24 lead into halftime.
Langlois led all players with 11 points through the first two
quarters, while Ellenor tallied nine to top the Golden Hawks.
The Lancers shot a solid 47.1% in the first half, and were 5-of-8
from three-point land. Laurier shot 31% from the floor in the
opening two periods.
The Golden Hawks looked to cut the deficit coming out of the locker
rooms, but their scoring was matched by the Lancers through five
minutes of the third quarter. The visitors got into the bonus
late in the period, but were still unable to cut Windsor's lead
into single digits by the end of the stanza. Kimberley
Yeldon's jumper brought the spread to within 10 heading into the
fourth quarter.
Shortly into the fourth, the Golden Hawks went on a 5-0 run to come
within five of the Lancers. However, the Lancers brought the
game into the paint, and sunk four straight free throws while
putting Laurier in danger of going into the bonus early in the
final period.
Bree Chaput tallied a three pointer, but the Golden Hawks faced an
11-point hill with 5:54 remaining in regulation thanks to a inbound
set play finished off the glass by Clemencon. The
former CIS player of the year stuffed Heather Payne's jumper on the
Lancers next defensive stand, and followed that up with two made
foul shots to push the lead back up to 10. That would be more
than enough, as the Lancers went on to record their eighth win and
first conference victory in 2013.
Windsor finished the match with a 41.5% field goal percentage
compared to 40.4% from the Golden Hawks who outrebounded Windsor
34-30.
The Lancers will look for their ninth straight win of the year on
Saturday evening, when they will welcome the Guelph Gryphons to the
St. Denis Centre. Game-time is set for 6:00 p.m., and will be
available live on USTREAM's Lancers TV.
