NICE guidance supports new device for healing bone fractures

NICE has today (Wednesday 9 January), published new medical technology guidance supporting the use of a device to heal fractured bones. The NICE guidance advises that the EXOGEN ultrasound bone healing system benefits patients and the NHS when used for treating long bone fractures with non-union (bone fractures that have failed to heal after 9 months).

  • NICE consults on new recommendations as it updates its guidelines on familial breast cancer

    NICE is currently in the process of updating its clinical guideline on familial breast cancer. Today (15 January), NICE has begun a consultation on a draft version of the guideline with new, provisional recommendations relating to genetic testing, screening and the use of preventive treatments. The draft update also, for the first time, makes recommendations for people with a recent diagnosis of breast cancer who also have a family history of the disease.

    The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is currently developing a clinical guideline on the management of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. As part of this process, draft recommendations have been published on the NICE website today (11 January) for consultation.

    NICE has today (Wednesday 9 January), published new medical technology guidance supporting the use of a device to heal fractured bones. The NICE guidance advises that the EXOGEN ultrasound bone healing system benefits patients and the NHS when used for treating long bone fractures with non-union (bone fractures that have failed to heal after 9 months). However, the case for adopting EXOGEN routinely for long bone fractures with delayed healing, that is, fractures which do not show radiological evidence of healing after 3 months, wasn't supported because of uncertainties in the evidence.
