Emergency Medicine/Wilderness Medicine Interest Group

The aim of the Emergency Medicine/Wilderness Medicine Interest Group is to provide information and support to students interested in the specialty of emergency medicine, as well as promote the development of clinical skills needed for practicing medicine in austere wilderness environments or other areas that lack access to care.  Because the group combines two aspects of medicine, students wanting to know more about either of the subjects are encouraged to become involved.

In February 2012, students traveled to Wake Forest Medical School for the Southeast Medical Student Wilderness Medicine Conference where they attended workshops ranging from topics on controlling bleeding to travel medicine.  In April 2012, the group sent a team of racers and volunteers to Augusta for MedWAR (Medical Wilderness Adventure Race), a competition combining wilderness medicine and adventure racing.  Sponsored by GRU-MCG, Southeast MedWAR was the original MedWAR race.  Complete with simulated helicopter crashes, alligator-filled swamps and other unique scenarios, the race always proves to be challenging.  The Medical Partnership team placed second among the thirty teams who participated.  In November 2012, students travelled to MedWAR Tennessee to compete and hone their skills.  Other future events range from hands-on workshops with local ER physicians to kayaking down the Broad River.  Dr. Kim Tomlinson, an E.R. physician at Athens Regional Medical Center, serves as the group's advisor.
