Child Care

The Federation works closely with the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care (OCBCC) to promote accessible, high quality public child care in the province. The lack of affordable child care affects all Ontarians who are parents and have difficulty accessing care for their children. Students with children struggle to pay the highest tuition fees in the country while, at the same time, pay for child care. Despite some recent investments in early learning and child care by the provincial government, child care centres on college and university campuses have continued to face cutbacks in funding and the threat of closures.

Additionally, the provincial child care subsidy program currently in place is denied to students who study part-time or who are part-time workers. This disqualifies students who may not be able to afford to study full-time from accessing subsidies that may be vital to their ability to afford child care. Many of the students who are most in need of the subsidy are not eligible to receive it.

In order to work towards accessible, high quality public child care, a postcard was developed by the Federation and the OCBCC.
